He's trying to keep the frustration at a minimum. It's hard, but at least he's making the effort, that counts for something, doesn't it? Maybe that frustration had taken over too strongly, he hadn't meant to use as much strength as he did on someone so much younger than he was.
It's a work in progress, which was why he loosened his grip on Beast Boy's arms. Loosened, but didn't let go. If he really did try to fly away, there wouldn't be any chasing him. Jumping high still meant you'd come back down.
