MARY OLIVER was a genius, wasn’t she? She made a life for herself following exactly the instructions she gives here—she paid attention, she never failed to be astonished, and she wrote it all down in poetry that strikes a chord in us because she told her truth about the world. . Paying attention and being awed by the world are two great creativity tools we could all use more often. It’s autumn in the Northeastern US—have you noticed the shadows left by fallen leaves on sidewalks? They’re ephemeral nature-paintings that remind us that life is beautiful and temporary. Maybe you’ve caught sight of frost on turning leaves, or the sound of animals migrating for the winter. Maybe a kid’s Halloween costume really tickled you (or maybe it was something that little one said or did while in that costume).
