A little baby dragon stumbles into your askbox, holding a small if not slightly burnt letter in his mouth. He hands the note to you, “I love you. You are a wonderful, loved person.” Pass it onto the people you feel deserve it the most.

Dragon Age Fenris (with implied Fenris/Hawke) Rating: General Words: 3,527 Warnings: mention of Act 2 character death. Hurt, angst. >> AO3 link << For all of its fancy words, not even in Tevene did any exist that might bring Hawke comfort. And what did Fenris understand of comfort, anyway? Fenhawke, Act 2. Some thoughts on what it's like for Fenris, who knows nothing of family, and Leandra, for whom family is everything.
-
Fenris isn't the only one of Hawke's merry band to drop by his estate. He comes when he wants to, always unnanounced. So perhaps it's no surprise, really, that Fenris often finds that Hawke is gone. Bodahn offers insight. I think he's gone to speak with the Dalish up on the mountain. Should be back in time for supper, I expect! Or sometimes it's more like Not sure, not sure. Messere Hawke is a busy man. So many important people to see... The latter always meant: The Hanged Man with Varric. Today he expects the same.

Fictober - Day 8
Prompt: “I know you do.” original fiction | working title: Peacemaker | 806 words
The infirmary cooled with the setting sun. Oranges and reds splashed across the room, throwing sharp shadows in every corner. The colors of rust and blood and the silhouettes descending into his private hell.
He wasn't there anymore. Torin had left it all behind. He'd never go there again, never, but he saw it every time he closed his eyes. Saw it in his dreams, in hazes of pain, in the corner of his eye. The basement would follow him long after his scars healed. He might forget his daughter's name, her smiling face, but not that damn basement.
Fictober - Day 7
Prompt: “No worries, we still have time.” original fiction | working title: Peacemaker | 408 words
Sasha woke when she stirred.
Last night he'd thrown her windows wide open. The night winds had been pleasant but as dawn crept nearer, the temperature dropped. A chill ran up her spine. Goosebumps rose on her bare skin. Sasha cracked one eye open to see if she'd woken up. Moving carefully so as not to disturb her, he tugged the sheets up over her back. He liked a bit of cold himself, although he was born of the sea. Viktoria had the desert in her veins.
Fictober - Day 5
Prompt: “Take what you need.”
original work | 1039 words
Her elegant gowns were gone. Kharis had a shapeless dress, an apron, and too-small shoes. She had beautiful furniture once. Wood woven into armoires and bed frames, fabrics in every color and pattern imaginable. Her living space had been reduced to a shack, totally bare but for a straw-stuffed mattress and a stove. It used to be with one click of her fingers, she had anything she wanted: food, jewels, paints. All Kharis knew of wealth was that she had it. She never thought about how much she had or how to save it. What did it matter to her -- an heiress, the most coveted hand in the Crest, with royal blood in her veins?
Tamrith was no better off. They were birds dropped from the nest. Tamrith had no choice. Kharis joined him of her own accord, for what else could she do after seeing his own family cast him aside? She knew leaving would be hard, but it would be far harder to pretend as if she condoned Tamrith's exile.
"Any luck?" she asked him.
He toed off his boots at the door, leaning up against the splintery wall. "No. Nothing."
Three weeks passed since they were forced out of the Crest. Three weeks since they took the pulleys down into the mountain's hollow for the first time in their lives. And in those three weeks, they survived on what little Kharis had stolen from home and sold in the peasant markets.
If the merchants swindled her, she'd never know. Their money ran out. And no one wanted to hire casteless exiles.
Kharis folded her arms over her chest and bit her tongue.
He sighed. Pulled her into his arms, pressed a kiss to her brow. She couldn't look at him, not into the eyes of this broken man with whom she'd planned her fairytale future. "Tomorrow will be different. As long as we have each other, we'll get through this. I know we will."
But there was nothing to get through. No hill to crest or path to find. They were not lost, waiting to find home; she'd cut their lines and now they were adrift. Forever.
Tamrith wrapped them in their only sheet by the hearth and Kharis tried with all her might to coax the dormant coals to life. Faint orange flickers teased her before guttering out. For the first time in her life, Kharis couldn't resonate with the fire spirits. Her touch could not stir them, they were beyond her, and the hearth remained dark and cold.
Hunger gnawed at her stomach. She hadn't eaten in two days. Hadn't slept in nearly three. Rest and nourishment were key to using magic; would Kharis never wield it again? Had she danced with fire for the last time? The dead coals seemed to mock her.
We'll get through this, she told herself as they huddled up on the straw mattress to sleep. We'll survive.
She took the little prayer with her when she woke in the dark the next morning. She took it with her when she and Tamrith murmured awkward goodbyes to part for the day. Kharis carried those empty words in her heart as she wandered into the bakery.
The baker's daughter went by "Honey." Kharis didn't know if that was her real name or not, nor did she care. A bell tinkled overhead when Kharis pushed open the door. Honey's welcoming smile fell the moment she laid eyes on Kharis.
"Back again, I see. What do you want now?"
"Food," she said without thinking at all.
Honey scoffed. "I hope you've got some coin." She paused. "No? Well, you'd best get on, then. This isn't a charity."
"I'll work for you."
"Do you know how to bake?"
Kharis' voice had never been so small. "No."
"Do you know how to clean ovens? Or wash dishes?"
"I... no."
"As I thought," Honey said. She wiped her floury hands down her apron. "You'd just get in the way. Tch... mages."
Kharis had wanted to protest. She had no time to learn frivolous things like baking and cleaning in the Crest. She learned magic, and the arts, and their great histories. But none of those would keep her alive down here.
She didn't budge -- in part from defiance, but mostly because she was simply too exhausted to move. If Honey wanted her to go, she'd have to use force.
"You just got in the way, too, when you were starting out."
Kharis couldn't bring herself to lift her head. But she knew the voice: the baker, Angela. A stout woman old enough to be Kharis' mother, who always seemed to smell of flour and milk. The little half-door separating the storefront from the kitchen swung open with a nudge from Angela's elbow and the older woman braced a basket of baked goods on her hip. Her disapproving frown did not sway her daughter.
"And don't be so cold. I didn't raise you like that."
Honey rolled her eyes. Angela shimmied out from behind the counter to come around to Kharis.
"Now. As for you," Angela said, "I can't promise you good money. I have little ones to feed. But I can let you take home some of what's left at the end of the day if you clean for me."
It was so menial. It was below her. If only they'd seen her as she was before, they would have piled offerings at her feet and prayed for it to be worthy of her. I don't have any other choice, do I? she thought. Bitter as it tasted, she had to swallow the truth: her only options were survival and starvation.
"All right."
Angela nodded her approval. And something happened that Kharis did not understand. The baker extended her basket full of seeded breads, oats, millet, and sweet rolls. "Take what you need, dear. For you and your husband. I'll need you fed and rested for your first shift tomorrow, understand?"
She took the basket. Numb. Disbelieving. Fragrant sourdoughs and molasses and fresh grains... A single breath filled her lungs with a swirl of hope. And Kharis did something she'd never done in front of another person in her seventeen years of life.
She sobbed.
