POST-PERFORMANCE
As the time for my groups performance became near, the more nervous I became. Being the first group after the break gave us more time to setup and by the time we had set up all our instruments and sound checked my nerves had disappeared and I was ready, maybe even excited to play. Surprisingly I found the whole performance to be a fun experience and I think I have learned many skills throughout my time of the sound project.
PRE-PERFORMANCE
Form groups and participate in a 5 minute live performance.
Originally I had formed a group called MC^4 with Kelz, Anna and Amelia but things happened and people got shuffled around. Amelia and I ended up joining a group called Zootopia with EJ, Alex, Amal and Caro. We immediately got to work on creating our graphic score, we individually drew our separate score and then EJ created a final Photoshop version.
The group is named Zootopia to reference the animistic nature of how music is created. We also wanted our sound to be quite ambient but still retain a Jungle-like sound. We decided to use Amal’s Sonic Appropriation project as our background track as it has quite an ambient nature vibe. Amelia’s instrument completely concaved on the Monday afternoon so she had to re-make her instrument. Also on the Monday my wires that were soldered to the coins completely broke off which was fixed with a quick soldering. My group experimented with a few different songs but didn’t really decide on what one we were doing until the day before the performance, which I have yet to decide if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
MY FAILED INSTRUMENT
I had completely forgot to blog that a had planned an instrument prior to my completed one. This instrument didn’t work out as I couldn’t find the parts I needed to create it. The instrument was planned to work with an electric motor that was connected to a sort of fan end. A button would be pushed and the motor would start making the fan end hit different materials hence creating different sounds.
INSTRUMENT BUILDING PT. 2
After a few days of research, I have decided to continue on the path of electronic audio. The cause of this primarily because of my little to naught knowledge of acoustic instruments. I figured even if I had made an acoustic instrument it would be difficult for me to play. To me an electronic instrument just seems a lot easier for my technological brain to comprehend.
After researching I came across the fact that humans somehow generate electricity. In an article written by Julia Layton it states “Everything we do is controlled and enabled by electrical signals running through our bodies. As we learned in intro physics, everything is made up of atoms, and atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have a neutral charge, and electrons have a negative charge. When these charges are out of balance, an atom becomes either positively or negatively charged. The switch between one type of charge and the other allows electrons to flow from one atom to another. This flow of electrons, or a negative charge, is what we call electricity. Since our bodies are huge masses of atoms, we can generate electricity.”
This is something I want to incorporate in my instrument, kind of like making my body apart of an electrical circuit. Having some knowledge on electrical circuits I believe I can create a basic circuit that produces sound. For this I will need to go to an electrical shop that sells things such as resistors, transistors, etc.
I decided I should probably find a simple audio circuit via google images so I have a basic outline of what I need to make.

Collage Project
After a few days I’ve finished both the digital and physical collage’s. I had a great time generating images and creating the physical collage as I found it very therapeutic working with my hands for a change instead of my phone or laptop. I suppose that what was the point of this project was to be thinking with you hands.
