The best thing about Bloodborne is that the game never seems to run out of little details to share with you. I adore it most when those little details help to construct some part of the games lore. Like even the shop messengers have a bit of lore to them!
These dudes are the normal bath messengers you see in the Hunters Dream and if you’re lucky, the chalice dungeons. Like the rest of the messengers you see around the game they appear to take an interest in you and seem to be all round jolly souls. The game itself describes them as being somewhat naive in nature, naive to the hunters purpose and maybe what the hunter actually even is.
On the other hand, there are the insight messengers. These guys have a distinctly different way with the Hunter. They seem uninterested with the Hunter, not even looking at them or reaching for them. They quite literally give the Hunter the cold shoulder (seriously watch them guys, they got some attitude).
They seem to be this way as they have acquired insight, the only currency they are interested in. The insight has perhaps enlightened them to the fact that the Hunter is just another being, nothing truly worthy of reverence. In a way, both types of messenger reflect the progress of the Hunters in the dream themselves. They enter the dream without insight, unable to perceive the true nature of the gods. Gradually the Hunters come to understand the gods as Great Ones, not gods. Great Ones who can be slain like any beast, and so the veil of naivety and reverence falls away from the Hunters just as it has the insight messengers.
