A common question people pose to me is essentially: “What is the easiest and cheapest thing to brew?” I tell those people that cider is the easiest and cheapest thing to brew. Then they ask me, “How can I get started?” 

Well, let’s do that. I will demonstrate two simple ways to make a gallon of cider. Both of the recipes are extremely easy to carry out, but the BASIC gallon recipe features ingredients that you can purchase for less than $4 and equipment you likely already have at home. The most exotic part of the whole thing is the yeast. If you don’t have a local home brew store that carries yeast then either move off your isolated compound and reintegrate yourself into society, or follow the links in the ingredients list. 

BASIC 

Ingredients

1 gallon of not organic apple juice from concentrate 

1 packet champagne yeast 

Equipment

For sanitization, I will rinse my gallon jug out thoroughly, then wash it in the dishwasher. Then I’ll rinse it out again. I’m all about rinsing. I’ll do the same thing with my funnel, then I’ll pour the apple juice into the gallon jug through the funnel. Then I’ll add the yeast. For the rustic touch, I’ll use aluminum foil as sort of an airlock.

SERIOUSLY THO 

Ingredients

1 gallon organic apple juice from concentrate

1 packet fruit wine yeast

1 teaspoon yeast nutrient

3/4 cup table sugar

As you can see, this recipe takes advantage of a minimal investment in home brewing. For sanitization here I will make a solution of Io-STAR in the glass jar, and place the spoon in there. Then I will dump the solution and allow the jar to air dry or rinse it out. I’ll pour the apple juice and yeast nutrient into the jar, and stir. Then I’ll attach the airlock, put all this stuff in a dark place and go chill for a while.
