Hans Wener Henze, on moving to Italy during his rebellious youth, after facing criticism by modernists of his time in postwar Germany. The New York Times explores Henze's life as an outsider, leading to a prolific output throughout his 85 years, including his opera The Bassarids. The Philharmonic, conducted by Christoph von Dohnånyi, performs orchestral selection from the opera starting this Thursday at the Philharmonic. The Times calls The Bassarids a "seductively beautiful celebration of irrationality, disorder and mindless obedience," containing, "one of the scariest final curtains in all of opera."
