The Bacchante
c. 1853
Artist : Jean Léon Gérôme
Me, bouncing around my apartment while hopped up on gummi peach rings: Χαίρε Νύμφαι, χαίρε Βάκχε!
I’ve had to downsize a lot since moving but this is my current altar set up! The altar box is for Dionysus and I have a little music box to represent Pan for now. I’ve also made offering jars for them both.

Dionysus
Today is Sunday, the day of sun gods. But we are going to be talking about someone I’ve really wanted to talk about for a while, Dionysus. Dionysus is the Olympian god of Wine, wine-making, grapes, grapevines, and ecstasy. He is the patron god of theater, actors, and the arts. Common symbols of him are panthers, leopards, cheetahs, and grapevines. He is one of the most unique of the Gods, as he had a sort of “earthly ministry”, sort of like Jesus, according to the Christians. It is part of a set of myths, known as The wanderings of Dionysus. In these stories he has a set of followers called the Thiasus, a specific part of this group is called the Maenads, who are the females followers of Dionysus. The Maenads were described as constantly in a state of euphoria, and somewhat crazy. They dressed in dear skins, and carried around sticks wrapped in grapevines. This is also the name of the Priestesses of his cult throughout Greece. Being the god of madness and ecstasy, his cults were a bit crazy. They were known to gather in the woods, get drunk, dance, and become so indulged in a state of ecstasy, they would kill and eat the flesh of living animals in hopes to see visions of Dionysus and the afterlife. Of course the people who call upon him now aren’t gonna do that, but there are plenty of other ways we can honor and worship Dionysus. He affects our everyday lives, even for those who can’t, don’t, or aren’t old enough to drink. He is the god of art, and things like tv, music, these are all expressions of art. He is a god of Happiness and art. Being completely Happiness is something we all strive for, something we all would give an arm and a leg for. Every time you have a moment of euphoria, a moment in which you feel completely content and happy, that is a gift from the god Dionysus. May the blessings of the gods be upon you, until then.
