What should everyone carry on them everywhere? (Tradeoff of weight/bulk against usefulness)
It depends on personal preference and the environment. If i'm in the city, i usually have a lighter, some first aid gear, and a small pocket knife, and you can add to that a torch and some water. Remember that its not worth carrying something illegal when there's almost no chance you'll need it. If i'm out in the bush, it still depends on where, but you'll never catch me without a decent fixed blade knife, at least 3 ways of starting fire (ferro rod, lighter, matches etc), a space blanket, at least 10 meters of good strong cordage, and a container that i can store/boil water in. 5 items, cutting tool, cordage, shelter, container, combustion device, these things are in my mind 100% necessary in any wilderness scenario. Other items should be added to make things easier, but those 5 items are a pain in the backside to replicate in nature without knowledge of materials.
