Request: basement Gerard asks you to be his date to aunt’s fancy birthday party, gee in suit, mikey loves you two together
Word count: 2 000 (wow, look at these beautiful three zeros in a row. Perfect.)
A/N: Yes, this is a gender neutral reader, even though they are wearing a suit. Because I, a female, would prefer wearing a suit over wearing a dress at most family parties. And I take no criticism for happy Mikey. AND: Happy Birthday to Mr. Gerard Way. Thank you for all the inspiration and strength to keep on fighting which you have given me and so many other people. I hope you never find this story bc that would be very embarrassing.
One more look in the mirror? Not like there was enough time to change anything anymore, so…? You turned around none the less, and looked yourself over in the huge mirror in your hallway. The suit you wore was of an elegant and very flattering cut, and sky blue. You had been hesitant about it at first when you had bought it, but now the blue was a lot more easy going on the eyes than black would have been. Not that you minded the black, in fact Gerard would turn up in a black suit, but for you, you felt the blue matched better, especially considering the wonderful spring weather outside. You ran your fingers through you hair and secretly wondered whether it would stay like this throughout the entire day, when the doorbell rang. Quickly you walked over to the coat rag, grabbed your jacket, and opened the door.
Outside Gerard was bouncing up and down on his heels, and when he saw you, his chin dropped slightly.
“Wow, (y/n), you look great,” he complimented, unable to take his eyes off you.
“Thanks, so do you!”
And you were not lying. You were used to seeing Gerard wearing ripped jeans and washed out band shirts that were several numbers too huge for him. But now he was dressed in the black suit he had told you about, a blue shirt, which magically matched the colour of your suit, and a tie. His unruly black hair was brushed and seemed to have been brought into some kind of order, but was already defying all the effort again. He looked more than just great.
Offering you his arm, he walked you to the car and held the door open for you, before quickly jumping in on the other side behind the wheel.
“Thank you for doing this,” he said, when he turned into the next street, “I really didn’t want to be the only one without a date, again.”
“It’s fine, anytime,” you shrugged.
Gerard had called you a week ago, asking if you were okay with being his date for his aunt’s birthday. The way he had phrased it had not made it clear if this was a real date, or just a fake. Since you were not dating, you assumed the latter. Not that you would have minded if it had been a real date. On the contrary.
The rest of the drive went by fast. You talked a little, about the usual stuff, music, friends, family, and listened to the radio.
The party was at a fancy restaurant with a huge garden. If you had worried about being overdressed earlier, these worries now were gone. Wearing your suit, you were pretty much the golden middle between all the other outfits the guests were wearing. Gerard had offered you his arm again, and guided you inside, where Mikey was the first one to spot you.
“Gee, (y/n), hey,” he laughed and came over, “you look great together.”
“I should hope so,” Gerard laughed, and quickly sent a glance to you, checking if you were okay with his statement.
“You don’t look to bad yourself, Mr. Way,” you laughed, and let go of Gerard’s arm to adjust Mikey’s bow tie.
“(Y/n), Gerard, you’re here,” Mrs. Way greeted, and politely you shook her and her husband’s hands.
You had met Gerard’s parents only twice before, and were not entirely sure if they knew you and Gerard were not together, but you did not bother to correct them, when they encouraged you to go over to the photographer who was currently taking pictures of all the couples.
Gerard did not seem to be bother either, because he just took your hand, and led you over to where his mother had pointed you.
On the way there you met Mikey’s girlfriend Kristin, who you knew from all the D&D evenings which the brothers loved hosting, and halfway to the photographer, you even found his aunt whose birthday it was.
After congratulating her, and Gerard handing her a box of chocolates he had been hiding in his jacket, she started asking about you.
“This is (y/n), we met in one of our college classes,” Gerard explained. He seemed to be ready to elaborate on it, but his aunt spotted someone else across the room.
“Ah, college, a wonderful place to fall in love. Good to meet you (y/n),” she mumbled, and left you standing.
“Okay-“ you laughed, and Gerard shook his head.
“She’s always like that. Her thoughts are never in one place for too long,” he grinned, “Shall we take that picture?”
The photographer had arranged a couple of flower as the background in front of a huge curtain, and patiently gave advice to the people he was taking pictures of.
“Stand a little closer,” he suggested, waving Gerard to step closer to you, “come on, you two, don’t be so shy!”
You tried to ignore the hammering heart in your chest, and moved your weight from one foot to the other, so you were leaning closer to Gerard. From this close up you could smell his deodorant. You flinched in surprise as you felt him place his hand on your waist, and pulled you a little into him. With big eyes you looked up to him, but he just focused on the camera, and smiled gently.
“Wonderful, perfect, that’s it,” the photographer cheered, “you’re done. You can pick up your pictures later. Next!”
Quickly Gerard and you stepped aside, making space for the next couple.
“Should we- should we go into the garden?” Gerard’s cheeks were dusted over pink, making you wonder if he had been as nervous about getting these pictures taken as you had been.
“Sure, let’s catch some fresh air,” you agreed, and side by side you stepped onto a huge terrace. The garden was truly gigantic. A huge field of flowers spread out before you, and in the distance huge trees reached up into the sky. Small tables with chairs were spread out across the lawn. Standing close to some rose bushes were Mikey and Kristin. They had stuck their heads together and were giggling, but when Kristin saw you, she pointed over to you, and the two met you halfway to them.
“Got the picture taken,” Mikey asked, and you could not help but wonder what he was up to. Judging by his wide grin? Something evil.
“Yeah, we- we did,” Gerard nodded.
“I really have to say, you two look so happy together,” Kristin smiled, “I mean, I knew you liked each other, but…”
“It’s good to see you finally had the courage to ask (y/n) out,” Mikey completed Kristin’s sentence, and playfully hit Gerard’s shoulder.
“We-“
“I know, I know,” Kristin interrupted you, “you’re not supposed to say that to people, but you two just have such wonderful energy together. And Mikey told me how much Gee loves you.”
“I-“
“I’m glad you’re happy now, dude, you really deserve this,” Mikey grinned even wider at interrupting Gerard, “come on babe, I think it’s almost time for the first course.”
And with that he took his girlfriend’s hand, and they quickly walked away, leaving Gerard and you in stunned silence.
“What just happened,” you asked weakly.
“I never- I never told Mikey how much I love you,” Gerard protested, “I-“ Helplessly he turned to you. “I don’t- he made that up- I-“
You did not know what it was but somehow Gerard had managed to completely ruin your day with these couple of stammered words. What had you been thinking anyway? That this was some stupid rom-com where you pretended to be his date and in the end he would admit to actually having been in love with you the whole time? Just because you wanted it to be that way did not mean it was that way. Trying to will the stinging in your eyes away, you swallowed hard.
“I think Mikey said food’s gonna be served soon,” you managed to choke out, and turned to walk away.
“Hey, (y/n), no, wait, that wasn’t- that’s not- shit!”
Quickly he grabbed your wrist, and turned you back around to him.
“Shit, I messed up, okay, whatever, fuck this,” Gerard mumbled more to himself than to you. Looking up into your eyes, he bit his lip, “I never did tell Mikey how much I love you, he made that part up, but-“
“It’s fine,” you shrugged, “You needed someone so accompany you, so your family doesn’t bug you about why you don’t got a date. It’s fine.” Damn it, how was your voice so steady and calm when all you wanted to do was cry and run away. Maybe you should try to get into voice acting instead of animation at art school?
“Let me finish please,” Gerard asked, trying to catch your eyes, but you avoided looking at him, scared you could not hold back the tears. “The point is that I do love you, or at least am totally in love with you, have been since basically the first time you set down next to me in class. That’s why I asked you to come today, I thought maybe I could ask you to be my real date and not just some pretend date, but it turns out I’m far too much of a coward to do that. But I do love you, and I want you to be my real date for this, but I didn’t tell Mikey. And now I probably messed up our friendship.”
He let go of your wrist, and stepped back. He looked sad and lost and scared, but there was a confidence in his eyes you had not expected. You knew that he meant every word he had told you, and if you would ask him now if he meant it, he would probably laugh in despair, throw his head back and exclaim that indeed he did. So you did not ask, and instead took the step towards him which he had taken away from you.
“Yeah,” you whispered, gently taking his hands in yours, “you totally messed up our friendship.”
You waited for Gerard to look into your eyes in confusion before you closed the small gap between you, and pressed your lips against his. You could feel him tense up for a second, before he under stood. His skin was cool from the spring air, and his lips still quivered slightly as he let go of your hands, and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into him, while kissing you sweetly.
“Hey, stop making out, the first course is on,” Mikey shouted from the terrace, surprising both you and Gerard.
“Shut up,” Gerard shouted back to his brother, who ran bent over laughing, and walked back inside.
Questioningly you looked up at Gerard.
“Where does that leave us,” you wondered, intertwining your fingers with his.
“Everyone in there already thinks we’re dating…”
“And I return your feelings,” you added, “just so that that’s clear.”
Gerard giggled quietly.
“Well, in that case I think I’d really like you to be my official not-fake date for the rest of the day,” he announced, “and even longer, if you want that.”
“I’d love that,” you agreed.
“Now that that’s cleared up, I think we definitely should see what kind of fancy food we can get in there,” Gerard laughed.
“We’re college students! We eat whatever free food we can get!”
Together you walked back to the terrace, but just before walking in, Gerard stopped you.
“Were Mikey and Kristin planning this?”
You thought back to how they had giggled when Gerard and you had stepped into the garden, and glanced over at them, sitting at the table, watching you two closely.
“Definitely,” you decided.
“Damn it, I owe them!”
“So do I, don’t worry,” you patted Gerard’s back, and together you walked over to your seats next to Mikey and Kristin, who were already grinning far too brightly.

Falling asleep with your best friend basement Gerard late at night during a Star Wars marathon (lol I’m sorry can u tell i love basement Gerard)
Our Galaxy, Not So Far Away
Pairing: Gerard Way x Gender Neutral ReaderRating: GeneralRequested By: AnonWord Count: ~900Author’s Note: I love me some basement gee too anon, so I hope you enjoythis! It’s loosely pulled from the time my now boyfriend and I tried to bingeall the Star Wars movies in one night before we were dating (and he might have evenbeen dating someone else? Whoops!). Also very loose spoilers for the end ofReturn of the Jedi, if you’ve never seen it I guess.
“Ok, let’s make sure we have everything. Popcorn?”
“Check.”
“Sodas?”
“Check.”
“M&Ms?”
“Plain and peanut.”
“Movies?”
“What movies?”
“Gerard!”
“Kidding,” your friend Gerard laughed as he pulled the StarWars box set out of his backpack.
“Ugh, you would have had to go home and get them if you forgot‘em!” You scolded as he handed you the movie and you got it started.
You and Gerard had decided to take a break from school andwork and basically life all together and spend the night of May the Fourth campedout in your dorm room watching the original Star Wars trilogy before you had tofocus on studying for finals. Your roommate was gone for the weekend so therewas no one to bug you guys or call you nerds or ask if you were dating.
Gerard had been your friend for as long as you couldremember. You were a couple of outcasts, but it didn’t matter since you had eachother through thick and thin. You didn’t go to the same college, but you wereboth in the city, so you were near enough that you hung out a lot. You lovedGerard in a way that you didn’t love anyone else. You felt like if soulmateswere a real thing, that he must be yours.
You never spoke this out loud to him though, it didn’t feelnecessary. You told him how much you loved spending time with him, and you werehis biggest cheerleader when he was feeling unsure about something he wasworking on. You were the shoulder he cried on when things got dark.
It wasn’t one sided either, if anyone asked, and sometimeswhen they didn’t, he would talk about how much you were his favorite person inthe world. He always looked forward to the next time you and him would get to hangout. If you were busy, he missed you and would take time to check in with you, especially if you were stressed out due to school, distracting you just enoughto lighten up your mood. Nothing else felt better to him than when you greetedhim with a warm hug, your arms wrapped around his middle.
You settled into your bottom bunk bed, as Gerard lounged inthe beanbag chair you had on the floor. The plethora of snacks sat between youand you both dug in as the opening crawl began.
“I had such a long day, I’m gonna be so embarrassed if I can’tget through these movies,” you said as you cracked open a soda, hoping thecaffeine would help the sleepiness you could already feel creeping in on you.
“Don’t wimp out on me now (YN), it’s been so long since wemarathoned these movies!” Gerard replied.
“I know, I know, I’ll try.”
“Do or do not, there is no try.”
“Gerard, I love you, but shh.”
You were almost through A New Hope when you felt youreyelids getting heavier. You knew laying on your bed wasn’t going to work anymore.
“Ok, Way, shift over,” you said climbing out of bed and ploppingdown next to Gerard on the bean bag chair.
“Why,” he whined before putting his arm around your shoulderso you were both more comfortable.
“Because I’m gonna fall asleep on my bed,” you replied asyou settled in.
Sitting upright, you were able to stay awake through EmpireStrikes Back, but by the time you finally got into Return of the Jedi, you werefighting against sleep again.
The next thing you knew you were being woken up by the ewokscelebrating the fall of the empire on the screen. You glanced back at Gerard, his head hanging back, sound asleep. You peeled yourself out from under his armand turned off the movie. When you turned back, Gerard was waking up, blinking andbleary eyed.
“We failed dude,” you said, sleep thick in your voice.
“Eh,” he shrugged and then ran his hand through his hair. “Iguess I should go then.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s 3 AM and you’re gonna crash and die and then whowould I hang out with? Besides, you aren’t my roommate so if you die, it’s noteven like I get out of my finals.”
He laughed as he got up stretching. “Ok, well I’m gonna goto the bathroom, I’ll be right back.”
After he slipped out of the room, you put on your PJs andran to brush your teeth. When you got back, he was back, looking like he hadsplashed water on his face, back in the beanbag chair.
“Gee, just sleep in my bed with me,” you said hoping he’d betoo tired to argue.
“Are you sure?”
“Yea, we’ve shared your bed before, it’s fine.”
“But my bed is big, yours is so tiny.”
“I know, it’s dumb, just get in.”
Gerard climbed onto your bunk and you adjusted the pillowsso you would each have one before settling in next to him, face to face.
“We should try to watch them again this summer,” Gerardsuggested.
“Yea, but we gotta start earlier in the day.”
“Agreed.”
You both lay in silence, the darkness of the room envelopingand luring you both to sleep.
“Gerard?” You murmured, finding his hand in the dark andtaking it in yours. He squeezed it and started rubbing circles on it with histhumb.
“Hmm?”
“I love you.”
“I know,” he replied pulling you close, holding you as hepressed a kiss to your forehead as you both drifted off to sleep.
Request: So Gee is out at work or college or something and the reader goes over to his place to wait for him, and his room is in the basement so she goes down to his room and puts on some music like Tainted Love by Soft Cell or something and starts dancing, but like, unexpectedly and really like risqué. And then Gee also gets back early and stands in the door way and just watches her and she doesn’t know he’s there and he’s like wow u should dance for me more often and then it like carries on to fluff <3

It was cold and grey outside and while you usually did not mind the weather being as unenjoyable as today, right now the wet, chilly winter atmosphere darkened your mood. You had been sitting by the window for a while now, trying to relax after the stressful day at college, but not even your favorite cup of hot chocolate was able to brighten the dark clouds that had sneaked from the sky outside into your head. You waited until the tingling in your legs got unbearable, then you stood up, and walked over to your closet, pulling out a warm, cozy pullover and a soft scarf which you wrapped around you before you headed out of the house.
The wind that had blown this morning had died down, the air was not really cold, but not warm either, and the dark, empty branches were still dripping from the shower of rain that had fallen while you had been on your way home.
The streets were mostly empty, except for a few people who walked their dogs, or hurried down the pavement, piling shopping bags in their arms.
It did not take you too long until you reached your destination. The house was tall, just like all the houses in this area were, and the old bricks looked especially dark from the rain. You rang the doorbell next to the tiny sign that read ‘Way’ several times, never receiving an answer on the duplex system, nor being let in by the electric buzzing of the unlocking door. So instead you pulled out your keychain and selected the small, silvery key that fit the lock.
You still remembered how Gerard had given the key to you. It had been long before you got together, long before your friendship turned into more than that. He had insisted on giving you this key in case you ever wanted a place to hang out at. You had shaken your head, and denied his offer, but he had been so insistent, that you had ended up taking the keys anyway. You smiled at that memory, and let yourself in; making sure the door fell into its lock behind your back.
The corridor was narrow, and two of the three lightbulbs broken, so the light was dim, and the fading daylight barely made it through the dusty window of the door. You gripped the railing of the staircase and climbed down into the basement, where Gerard had his apartment. Once again you fit the key into a lock, and the door sprung open, allowing you access.
The flat was dark, and the smell of coffee had grown cold, a sure sign that no one was not home yet. You turned on the light, and yellow beams streamed through the lamp you had helped Gerard choose. You kicked off your shoes and placed them neatly next to the pair of winter boots under the coat rack. The scarf was thrown over one of the coat hangers before you hesitantly advanced into the small kitchen.
You knew it was silly, feeling so reserved in a place where you almost spent as much time as in your own flat, but without Gerard in here you felt like you were invading his privacy. But apparently he did not think so; otherwise he would not have given you his keys, would he?
Carefully you filled water into the coffee machine, and added ground coffee into the filter, before switching it on. It immediately awoke to live, and started sucking water into the boiler. You took out two cups, and placed them on the little table so they were prepared for the coffee once it was ready.
You left the kitchen, and strode over to the bedroom. This room was the heart of the small flat. It was by far the biggest room, and the most decorated as well. A king sized bed stood under the small windows that lined one side of the room. Books and comics were piled on the nightstand next to it. A huge desk, covered in drawings and more comics faced the door. The wall opposite the bed was lined with bookshelves, these too filled to the brim with books and comics. The few spaces between were filled with action figures and little souvenirs. In front of these shelves stood a sofa and an armchair, both old and used, but cozy and familiar to you. You strode over to the radio that somehow was squeezed between the books.
In the kitchen the coffee machine was bubbling and puffing, filling the flat with the delicious smell of freshly brewed coffee.
The button of the radio cracked under your finger as you switched it on, and for a moment you were worried you might have broken the old thing, but then music started flowing out of the speakers. The volume was turned up pretty high, apparently Gerard had engulfed himself in the sound of whatever song had been on the radio the last time he had used it. Some eighties tune blared from the radio and filled the room.
You felt the tension that had weighted you down before, slowly fall off. Suddenly the grey weather outside was not bothering you anymore, not now that you were standing in your boyfriend’s bedroom, surrounded by his things, his smell, the coffee machine contently working in the room next doors, and some amazing music making you want to dance.
So that’s what you did.
You closed your eyes, and concentrated on the music, felt how the beat made your bones vibrate, how the melody fit so perfectly to the text. You started moving around with your eyes closed. You knew where the furniture was, even when you had spun around a few times. You moved your arms over your head, and moved your hips to the beat of the bass, while your socked feet smoothly wandered over the carpet. You knew it had been a good idea to come here, even if Gerard was not home yet. You always felt so safe at his place, so safe and free, so that was what you allowed your body to show with each movement you made.
Had you not been so occupied by the music, you would have heard how the flat door was unlocked again, and a tired Gerard entered his flat. He had heard the music from outside, so he was not surprised to find the lights turned on. Quietly he took off his coat and his shoes, and tip toed to the open door of his room. The music was still playing, the Star Trek lamp on the ceiling shed some warm light, and the windows over his bed were already dark. But his eyes were fixed only on you, as you moved through the room with such confidence and joy. He leant against the frame of the door, watching your every movement, how you jumped around and raised your arms. He smiled happily; proud to know that he was allowed to love you, all of you, because there was no one else he would rather call his, no one in the whole world. The music faded as the song came to an end, and the title melody of the radio channel played into the calming song.
Your dancing had stopped, and you stood next to the radio, breathing heavily.
“You should dance for me more often,” Gerard whispered, just loud enough for you to hear over the radio.
You jumped around in surprise, still unaware of his presence.
“You’re home,” you cheered and skipped over to where he was standing in the door, flinging your arms around his neck.
“Yes, I’m home,” he agreed and hugged you, his still cool skin against you warm one.
“I made coffee,” you told him, pulling away, intending to go into the kitchen to look after the progress the coffee machine had made, but Gerard held you in place.
“How about,” he whispered and carefully walked you backwards, his hands on your hips, “the coffee waits for a bit.”
He guided you to the bed on which he pushed you down once the frame was hitting the hollow of your knee. You giggled and pulled him down with you, connecting your lips softly with his when he landed on top of you. He kissed you for a while, his long lashes fluttering against your cheeks, and his breath hitching every time you gently bit down on his lip, but then he pulled away, his eyebrows knitted together in annoyance.
“Damn music,” he whispered and reached for the remote, turning down the still terribly loud music to a more tolerable level.
You giggled again before you pulled him back down by his shirt. You felt him smile into the kiss before he rearranged both of you more comfortably on the big bed. Your head was resting in the big pillow, and Gerard had pulled the warm Batman blanket over your legs so you would not get cold. You kept kissing for a long time before the day’s exhaustion demanded its tribute and you cuddled together closely.
Your head was resting on Gerard’s chest, and got moved up and down with every breath he took. His heart was beating firmly in his chest, and sometimes his belly glugged a little, making you smile tiredly every time. His hands were softly combing through your hair and he leant up several times so he could place a gentle kiss on it. It did not take long before you had fallen asleep, safe and warm in your lover’s arms, while outside the cold of another grey night flooded the streets of the city.

Part 1
The moment Gerard had stormed into the mall you were meeting at, a grin on his face, wider than you had ever seen one, telling you he would go on tour, your heart sunk. It felt like you lost the floor under your feet, spiraling down into an abys. Of course you were happy for him. You knew it was important to go on tour for a band, but five months apart from him seemed awfully long. You had smiled and kissed him, told him how proud you were, but he had noticed that you felt down anyway. That was why as soon as he was back in his room alone he called the other band members to ask if you could come. And of course they did not say no.
Now, two months later, you were standing backstage, the bass vibrating the floor and music filling the little dive bar that the band was playing at tonight. You were lying on top of a table and listened, not in the mood to join the sweaty, jumping, intoxicated audience. You felt the energy anyway. It seemed like most people knew the songs from the CD already, which was amazing. They were cheering and singing and having fun, and you were glad they did. But you were even prouder of the musicians, who in only such a short amount of time, had managed to create this little fan base.
“Are you (Y/N)?”
A young man with a black pony tail walked into the room, his dark eyes fixing on you.
“Yeah, need help with the merch,” you asked back, sitting up on the table.
“Yeah, my shift is almost over…”
“Sure,” you grinned and jumped up, amused by the nervousness the young man radiated. Obviously he had been insecure about asking you to help, even though you thought to have made clear earlier that you were here to help.
You followed him through a tiny door behind the bar, and from there to a table with shirts and CDs. By now you knew the prices without having to think twice, so you immediately started helping the two boys who were taking interest in one of the shirt designs. The young man with the pony tail said good bye soon after, leaving you to listening to your boyfriend’s band. You marveled at the audience who seemed to push the band further and further, reflecting the raw and almost violent energy they were radiating back to them, increasing it. You could not help but wonder if this was the best concert you had ever seen your friends play.
Every now and then someone came over to buy something, and after My Chemical Romance had finished their last song, it seemed as if the entire crowd suddenly gravitated towards the table with shirts and albums. Luckily Frank and Ray came to help you out, while Gerard and Mikey went to fetch more merch from the trailer.
The concert was almost over for a whole hour when finally the last people left the bar, leaving the five of you to start packing up the stage and the rest of the merchandise. A few fans had asked for pictures and the musicians had often been involved in little discussions about music, punk rock culture and instruments. While they moved the guitars, the bass, the drum set, and the monitors and cables to the trailer, you updated the inventory of the merch, realizing that you had never sold as much in one evening as tonight.
When you told the band the news, they were excited, so excited in fact that they decided to celebrate the news with dinner in the diner around the corner.
Having something proper to eat like the vegetable burger you were now munching on, had become something rare since the band was on tour. You were travelling in a van so there was no opportunity to cook, and eating out like tonight was comparatively expensive, so you mainly lived of toast, cheese and apples.
You took a sip of the chocolate milkshake you were sharing with Gerard, and leant back against the cushion in the booth, cuddling into Gerard’s side who had his arm wrapped around your shoulder. You felt him smile down on you between two bites of his own burger, so you quickly leant up and placed a soft kiss on his jawline before you dedicated your attention your burger again.
After finishing eating, you stayed seated a little longer. Mikey ordered another plate with fries, making you smile a little. He was a lot like Gerard in certain ways, just quieter, more introverted. Gerard also ordered a second milkshake for you, knowing how much you loved them. You felt yourself get sleepy. The day had been exhausting. You had driven the van for almost six hours from yesterday’s venue to today’s, helped set up the stage, sold merch, helped clean up and now your belly was full and you were lulled in by Gerard’s familiar warmth.
You must have fallen asleep, because when you perked up at one of Frank’s enthusiastic laughs, it was almost two am. You listened to the conversation a little longer before you suggested going back to the van. No matter how comfy and relaxed sitting in this diner was, you had to drive some several hundred miles to tomorrow’s venue, and the earlier you started the better.
You did not remember much about the walk back to the car. Gerard was holding your hand, Mikey walked on your other side, quietly discussing comics with his brother, and Ray and Frank were play fighting a few meters ahead of you.
When you reached the car park next to the bar, where the van was parked, everyone quickly piled into the cramped space. Ray volunteered to drive and Mikey claimed shotgun. Frank, Gerard and you climbed on the backseats. Ray started the motor, put in an old Metallica tape, and switched on the heating. It was summer, but the nights were cool and the car too cold to be comfortable to sleep. You handed a blanket and a little pillow to the front for Mikey and Frank found one for you and himself as well. You placed the beige pillow with a stitched on flower pattern, that Gerard’s and Mikey’s grandma Elena had given you for the trip, between your head and the window, making yourself comfortable.
When Ray pulled out of the parking lot into the dark street, Gerard threw a blanket over you and rested his head against your shoulder, trying to cuddle into your side as good as possible. You grinned and wrapped your hand into his short, black hair, running your fingers through his locks.
“You need to wash your hair,” you mumbled sleepily, your eyes focusing on the street lanterns that passed by as you drove through the town.
“Why? Do I stink,” Gerard asked. He sounded tired, but happy.
Frank giggled from the other end of the backseat, also leaning against the window and wrapped in a wooly blanket.
“Nah, it’s just a little greasy,” you answered, shooting Frank a disapproving glance that he did not notice.
Gerard hummed in agreement and nuzzled his nose against your neck, sending a comfortable shiver down your spine.
You watched as the dark houses passed by and how the lanterns got fewer before Ray drove onto the highway. Quiet snores sounded from Mikey and Frank, the motor droned evenly and the melody of the music mixed with Gerard’s calm breathing.
You turned your head, careful as not to disturb your sleeping boyfriend and gently kissed his hair, a soft smile carving into your face. You knew he had a troubled mind, but you also knew how much he loved being on tour and how much it meant to him that you were here, to share all this with him. It meant the world to you. You slowly leant back into your pillow. It was not really comfortable, sleeping in a van hardly ever was, but it could have been worse. And you had Gerard, which definitely made up for a lot. Wild forests and fields and farms and cities passed by your window while you slowly fell asleep, your fingers still wrapped into Gerard’s hair.

Isn’t it supposed to be spring? You pulled your jacket tighter around your body and threw another glance on the piece of paper that had an address scribbled on it. You were definitely on the right street, just the house number proofed difficult to find. Finally you spotted the small sign with the letters ‘Nada Recording Studio’ next to a few stairs that lead to a basement apartment. You searched for the doorbell but could not find one, so you decided to knock instead. When your knuckles made contact with the dark wood of the door, it opened a bit. Unlocked, just like he said, you thought and pushed the door open further to step inside.
The corridor you found yourself in was dimly lit with a few old, raw lightbulbs and the floor was covered in dark fitted carpet. You followed the sound of voices, hoping they would lead you to the recording room, while you gripped the bag you carried a little tighter.
Frank, Mikey and Ray were sitting in the lounge, if you wanted to call a room with a sofa and a few magazines a lounge, and were talking quietly, apart from Frank’s occasional yelp when someone said something he thought to be funny. They were just discussing how they had loved the emotions Gerard had poured into singing ‘Early Sunsets Over Monroe Ville’, when Ray noticed a figure approach the lounge through the dark corridor. A moment later a young person stepped into the room, their eyes scanning it quickly.
“Dibs,” whispered Mikey, not loud enough for them to hear.
“What, no,” Frank hit Mikey’s knee.
You were a few years older than him, but hell, you were hot and who cared about a few years of age difference these days anyway, he was over eighteen. That you were attractive had not escaped Ray either, and out of the three he was the first one to find his voice again.
“How can we help you,” he asked, trying to sound casual when really he had a hard time not to freak out.
“You must be Mikey,” you pointed to Gerard’s younger brother; they had similar facial features, “and let me guess, Ray and Frank,” you pointed to the other two who nodded eagerly, “I come bearing gifts,” you joked and walked further into the room to put the bag you had been carrying on a table. “There are cookies,” you pulled out a tin filled with freshly baked sweets, “and some homemade elder syrup, I hope you like elder.”
You grinned at the wide eyes the three boys were giving you.
“Oh, you made it,” the cheerful voice of Gerard sounded from the corridor as he entered the room.
“Hey there,” you grinned as your boyfriend wrapped an arm around you.
“Oh damn,” Mikey whispered disappointedly.
“Not fair,” Ray agreed so quietly neither you nor Gerard could hear.
“I see you met the boys,” Gerard asked.
You stayed for the rest of the afternoon and watched the band recording while getting to know them better. Gerard had seemed pretty proud to introduce you to them earlier that day and when you left the studio hand in hand in the evening, you could tell how important it had been to him to share this with you. You knew how he felt about it. He wanted to show you all these things, just like he had spent hours showing you his drawings and sketches, because he felt like you became more a part of his life when you knew about these things. Gerard and you had not been together for long yet, but you had been friends for a few years now, so you knew about these little things that meant so much him. You loved it, when he shared something with you. It made you feel like you belonged at his side and took the nervousness away when you introduced him to more parts of your life.
When Gerard and you got home to his room in his parents basement, you curled up on his bed together.
“It was nice of you to make cookies,” he whispered, burying his nose in the crook of your neck and you could feel him inhale deeply.
“I thought I can’t just show up and not bring anything, I know how hungry you always are,” you told him, running your fingers through his black locks.
“Am not,” Gerard protested.
“Yes, yes you are,” you giggled.
“Hm, maybe,” he agreed.
Outside it had started raining; big, heavy raindrops beat against the basement window, making both of you sleepy. There was nowhere you needed to be, neither today nor tomorrow, and it felt just perfect, lying cuddled up next to Gerard in his bed, listening to the storm outside.
“Do you wanna watch a movie,” Gerard suddenly asked.
“Will we have to move for that,” you asked back, not willing to give up the comfort of this arrangement just yet.
Gerard sat up, smiling at your whining about the loss of his body heat. He jumped up and put a tape into the device underneath the television. He grabbed the remote and jumped back onto the bed next to you, pushing a pillow under your back so you sat up straight and wrapped an arm around your shoulder, pulling you into him again.
The movie he had chosen was one of the old horror movies he loved watching. You had seen the movie a dozen times by now, but the last time you had seen it, Gerard and you had not been together yet. You made not much of an effort to concentrate to the plot; too distracted were you by the boy next to you. You ran your fingers over the thin shirt he was wearing, listened to his breathing and how he whispered along with the lines of the movie. His long hair was ticking your neck a little and it smelled so perfectly of him.
You did not know who or when it started, but suddenly you were kissing him, the dull colors of the movie lighting up the room barely as you weaved your fingers into his locks. His lips were soft and you felt like almost losing your mind over the way he moved against you. One day this boy would be the death of you, you were sure.
The kissing that had started out desperately and demanding calmed down after a while, only lazy lips gently caressing against each other as you had sunken down the pillows, again lying on the bed comfortably. Your noses brushed against each other and in the dark you tried to get a look at Gerard’s eyes, but they seemed to be closed. You pressed another short kiss against his lips, feeling him respond barely, now that he was almost asleep. You smiled against his lips, knowing that he had let you in so deeply into his life when he had been so hesitant about it at first. You knew it was an honor and the proof of his trust. Trust that you could only hope he knew you had in him too.

The class goes well and by the end Peter’s grinning like a loon from all the attention. As usual he goes around collecting the guitars and grabbing up each child in a quick hug, sealing their friendships in his mind. Well, that is until he reaches little Mikey Way who darts out of his way the moment he hands over the guitar. In his year and a half as Junior Teaching Assistant, Peter’s never been turned down during his little hug ritual. It’s clear he doesn’t quite know what to do with this new reaction and stands, mouth agape, arms full of guitar and blinking owlishly after Mikey as he huddles with a few of the other kids across the room.
Frank doesn’t know whether to laugh or feel bad so he opts for providing a distraction instead. “Those guitars aren’t going to pack themselves away, Bud.”
Startled, Peter nearly drops Mikey’s guitar and fumbles with it for a moment before clutching it to his chest. “Sorry!” he yelps, disappearing to put it away.
Gerard Way shuffles in a few minutes later when about half the kids have been hustled out of the store before they can whine their way into owning any of the shiny equipment draped all over the walls. He’s got his hands full with a tray of coffees and a cigarette dangling precariously between his lips. Frank finds it far too attractive.
He’s jarred out of his moment of appreciation for the cute unkempt disaster that is Gerard Way by Briar dropping a box in front of his face.
“You’ve always had weird as fuck taste.”
Frank snorts. “My weird taste? Let’s just think about Hannah for a moment, fucker. I’m not the one that went down that road.”
Bob’s face screws up in this very unpleasant expression before all 5’8 of him shivers and he whines, “You promised not to bring that up again.”
Frank tosses a wink over his shoulder before going to help one of the mothers who’s looking very confused by all the kids gear. When he’s done with the mom (who’s fallen for the precious wide-eyed begging of her daughter and coughed up a hefty sum for a new guitar), Gerard is still there.
He’s running his fingers over an impressive sparkly silver bass as Frank approaches.
“I wouldn’t get too close,” he says, nodding towards where Mikey is ignoring Peter’s attempts at showing off by the drums, “They can sense weakness. You’ll end up with a bass he can’t even play before you can blink.”
Gerard giggles – there’s no other way to describe the high-pitched burst of bubbles that leave his mouth. “Oh I know. Couple months ago Mikey was sure he wanted to be an artist so I got him this really great set – may have gotten a bit carried a way to be honest. I think maybe he drew, like, a dandelion with it that afternoon before getting bored when it didn’t turn into a 3D image instantly.” He turns a lovely shade of pink and smiles sheepishly while his hands fly all over, gestures wide and sweeping and ending with his hand tucking that messy hair behind his ear. “It’s somewhere under the pile of old videogames now.”
Frank’s laugh makes Gerard chew on his lip again but Frank can still make out the smile behind it, “Ah god, the toy graveyard. I purge Pete’s about every three months otherwise the apartment would be overrun by now.”
Something weird flits through Gerard’s eyes that shifts his demeanour into something less approachable.
The shift leaves Frank confused, a feeling which is only compounded when the black-haired man holds out one of the coffees.
“I, uh, figured you could use a pick-me-up after all that.” he waves his hand towards the remnants of the guitar circle and doesn’t meet Frank’s eyes.
He grips the cup a little too hard and the black lid pops off, an embarrassing squeak leaving his mouth as both he and Gerard scramble to grab it before it hits the ground. It ends up in a tangle of fingers and spilled coffee with the plastic crushed between their hands and a big blotch of foam across Frank’s shirt.
They stare at each other for a moment before Frank lets out a breathless laugh and gulps down the remaining mouthful of coffee in his cup. Gerard still has his hand curled awkwardly around Frank’s and the lid. He doesn’t seem to notice.
Frank smiles, absolutely certain he looks like a psycho. “Thanks,” he says softly and gives the hand in his a gentle squeeze.
With a small nod, Gerard finally pulls back to slid his hand through his hair despite its coffee-covered state. He seems to realise what he’s done a few seconds later and that pink blush turns deep red as he quickly excuses himself, dashing off to fetch Mikey before leaving the store with an awkward, stilted wave towards Frank as they go.
