Studlagil Canyon (Studlagil, Stuðlagil) or Basalt Canyon. Photographer Ekaterina Sysoeva. Russia (Moscow).
One of the most impressive natural monuments in Iceland! Tall basalt columns, the purest turquoise river and breathtaking views.
The canyon is located in the eastern part of Iceland, in the valley of Jekuldalur, and the turquoise glacial river Jekulsau au Bru flows along its bottom. The canyon became popular due to the lowering of the water level in the river after the construction of the hydroelectric power station, which opened its beauty to visitors.
The canyon is based on a lava field left over from a volcanic eruption. The rapid cooling of the lava led to the formation of hexagonal basalt columns, which create majestic canyon walls. The glacial Yekulsau-au-Bru River has carved a canyon in the basalt rocks for thousands of years. The canyon walls are dotted with many basalt columns, which can reach a height of 30 meters. The descent into the canyon gives you the opportunity to see the columns up close and assess their scale.

BASALT COLUMNS!!!!!
Inspired by the basalt columns I saw in Iceland and Ireland. I imagine secret openings inside columns and dragons flying close. 🐉🤓
