The issue lies in the fact that the sincerity of the people changing their profile pictures and whatnot is a little questionable. ย I say this because a lot of these people are either:
the same people who exhibit trans*/homophobia in everyday life, however subtle.
totally unwilling to have a real conversation about actual LGBTQ problems. ย For instance, the total marginalization of trans* folks/POC within the community is a HUGE issue. ย The fact that non-heterosexual, POC, trans* people, and any combination of the three are extremely likely to be victims of hate crimes is a HUGE issue. ย It seems like a lot of people are just into this because gay marriage is "cute" and "happy" and a lot of them also do that whole weird fetishization of gay men, which is honestly really creepy and incredibly dehumanizing. ย I've seen more than one status/picture saying things along the lines of "the only reason you should be offended about a big, sparkly, fabulous gay marriage is that you weren't invited."ย
or they feel like they deserve some kind of pat on the back for being an "ally." Like, I mean good job for clicking your mouse a few times to make you profile picture the same as all your friends? However, that doesn't really do much of anything in the way making actual change. As much as I hate to say it, Lyman's douchey picture/comments on Facebook sparked more conversation and critical thinking about the issue than anyone else's "support." And conversation is what REALLY needs to be happening, not constant circle-jerking of straight people angrily agreeing that they should have the right to attend a big, sparkly, gay wedding or making feel good statuses about love or what have you and then expecting to get cookies for meeting one of the most basic requirements of human decency. Most importantly, straight people do not and cannot ~save the gays~ from the big scary government, especially when they are the same straight people who perpetuate so much bigotry in the first place.
I mean I dunno, social media "activism" is not inherently bad, in my opinion based on my limited reading of it. ย It's the smugly superior attitude of all the straight people who take part in it that really fucking sucks.
P.S.ย ย Keep in mind the Supreme Court cannot morally or legally take into account the opinion of the people when making decisions. So.
