@ your tags on that CJ and Andy gifset: listen I will Slowly convert people to this ship one single post at a time. The vision is there! The rest is entirely made up 😂😭
honestly mate it's canon to me at this point that they went to Berkeley together and Andy helped CJ discover her queerness during this time.
And I only came back to Tumblr earlier this year. I'm genuinely impressed with the force of your vision.

okay i finally finished everything for my midterms so my treat is i get to sit and write about josh--- thanks tessa!!
if anyone else wants to send more questions for josh, or anyone else (tww or other things i've blogged about!!), the post is here
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
everyone seems to understand that although Josh is supremely smart, he is also supremely dumb. he really has kicked puppy energy so often and i really love that everyone who watches the show just looks at him as a long lost friend whom they once picked apples with in papa’s orchard. except not me i identify with him in a carnal way. in terms of writing i love love LOVE when any fic brings in his relationship with his mom. she never gets a canon name (i don't think???) but in my heart her name is Dina and she's everything to me, and so is his relationship with her.
15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)
so the easy answer is samjosh. but there's a complicated aspect to it. because i think brad and rob had some WEIRD sexual tension especially in the first few seasons (literally no straight explanation for itsotg???) and then the fact that he goes back to sam at the end...
but the more complicated answer is that i think sam and josh are my favorite, but they don't end up together in my heart. there's something beautifully dysfunctional about them in season 4 when sam leaves for california, and then he just disappears... i know the irl reasons but i think that they have a really messy breakup but bc they're gay and its 2003 no one can know about it. so that's also why josh kinda goes off the rails after sam leaves too. it makes sense to me. that's why i've written two fics about it!!!
so the more complicated answer is they are toxic yaoi, and also to cope with senior year of high school i developed an oc that is josh's soulmate (if you've read you never gave a warning sign, he makes an appearance at the end...) and is NOT ashamed of josh but also doesn't work in politics because i think that's what he needs.
26. What's something the character has done you can't get over? Be it something funny, bad, good, serious, whatever?
there are so many things... so many iconic moments... but i think a really underrated arc of his is his arc with the matthew perry character in like season 5 (i think...) because he used to work really closely with hoynes, and seeing him have to deal with how much hoynes hates being vp and have a sex scandal, etc. i started writing a fic at one point about his guilt around hoynes (if he hadn't gone to work for bartlet, hoynes would have been president) but it never got finished.
thanks for asking questions! i miss writing west wing stuff.
3. a character that fandom has helped you appreciate
this one's difficult, i'm ngl! i still don't pay him a lot of mind and it's definitely just the people i follow who enjoy him in a very particular way but honestly, the pitt's frank langdon.
also leo mcgarry. he's not the sort of character i usually care a lot about but my forays into the tww fandom have pointed out some key moments that have really made him more endearing to me than i would've thought!
5. something you see in fics a lot and love
there's so many things i love in fic but i doubt i'll ever get tired of a good 5+1 fic... it can just lead to such interesting exploration of a particular aspect of a character!
14. the ship that always makes you smile
i was gonna say alina & mal from the grishaverse but tbh, there's a much more complex thing at work there than just smiling so! a more right answer is probably chidi & eleanor from the good place.
either august or november! which are both very different (obviously). but i love august cause i get the whole month off, which is superb. also reading festival. reading festival is a *big* reason for my love for august. best 3 days of the year. the lineup is insane every single year. also all points east / glastonbury (2027 i will be there.) and similarly, i always have a great concert lineup for august. its like the one month of the year which i actually get to have hobbies in, and the weather is nice! i see my family a lot in august (and my friends) and its just so great cause i can do whatever i want… for the whole month. however results day does dim august’s sparkle a bit.
november is also up there because ill generally be off from college for the first few days (there is a common theme here) and i actually get to have a break since college is chill in november! and i like the weather in november - not super rainy yet, cold but still warm enough to not need a coat. and yet again, its a good month for concerts. london is also very pretty in autumn! and it’s still light outside for most of the evening, but it gets dark early enough that i can walk around central (the nice parts) at a reasonable time. and november is just such a good month for watching the west wing in?? i cant explain it. its just such a good month for tv in general. (also i get a day off on black friday every year. i dont even go shopping most times but it certainly makes november better)
The last two months have been, to put it mildly, a shitshow.
First, her disastrous memo, her sheer stupidity that anyone she worked with could look at that and understand how she could possibly write such a thing. The anger, the humiliation, the rage that quickly turned to guilt when one of the people who had been most infuriated with her was in the hospital, fighting for his life after Rosslyn. It was pretty damn hard to stay angry at someone who'd been shot in the damn chest, after all. And on top of that, the President had been hurt, too. The President that Mandy truly did like and believe in. The President that she had, in so many eyes, betrayed by writing that memo, when all Mandy had been trying to do was paint an honest picture. The President under whose pleasure Madeline Hampton served.
What choice did she have but to resign?
The facts of the situation--that the memo had been written before she was ever in the employ of the Bartlet Administration, that she hadn't technically said anything that wasn't true--didn't matter as much as the optics. Didn't she know that better than anyone? Wasn't that the same argument she tried to make over and over, until Josh and Toby wanted to strangle her, that optics mattered? The White House Media Director had, publicly and privately, criticized the administration that she worked for. No explanation or apology that Mandy made would change that. The shooting at Rosslyn wouldn't change that.
When she'd given her resignation to Leo, she thought for a second that he might try to talk her out of it. He'd looked at the letter, back at her, opened and closed his mouth like he wanted to say something. Mandy had held her breath, but all Leo had said, in the end, was to call him if she ever needed anything.
She hadn't called him.

oh, probably Under Streetlights. i didn't write it all this year, but i finished, edited, and posted it this year, so i'm counting it! but i'm still really proud of it and i've gone back to reread it several times already
12. favorite character to write about this year
you wouldn't know it from what's actually been posted, but i've been having a blast writing wen qing! i love her! i want only the best things for her! which is why i made her sacrifice her own soul to resurrect one dead didi to save another don't worry about it!
19. any new fics to start next year
oh for sure. i have many wips and many ideas that are still percolating. the aforementioned wen qing one doesn't have really any plot yet, so i want to make that happen. there's also a genderswapped wwx fic that follows her as a kind of mountain spirit in opposition to lwj and the "civilization" of the jianghu at large. tho that one is very fraught because it is effectively a "het" wangxian thing. so idk. and then also the foxxian/dragonji modern urban fantasy one that i've still somehow only written tiny bites of??? so yeah... a few ;)
Ashley from Mass Effect. Yes, she's xenophobic and a woman character in the first game, but if people really listened to her info dumping in the first game and think then they'd realize that she's coming from a family where her grandfather was forced to surrender in a no-win scenario during the First Contact War and the Alliance blacklisted the entire family from ever getting on the Officer Track even 60 years later. So she already has negative prejudices in addition to whatever propaganda is still around from the First Contact War.
AND she brings up the very realistic point of letting other Council Races having unrestricted to the Normandy's tech/engines, which is mentioned having Alliance/Turian proprietary tech since this is a joint effort. Yes, this is before you really get to know Tali and Wrex but IMO she wouldn't be doing her goddamn job if she didn't bring it up to the person running the ship.
So yes, in the first game she's bringing her family baggage into it- but you do have the option to call her out on it and have it be a "teachable moment" making her re-examine her prejudices.
besides in the second game you have to do the exact same thing with Legion and Tali yet Tali doesn't get half of what Ashley does...
19. you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
I don't really have anything??? I'm such a Fandom Old that I just like what I like with Mass Effect. I mean those games did make me an alien fucker so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
That Alec Ryder had control issues. Like instead of letting Ellen Ryder die, he puts her in stasis, doesn't tell anyone, and puts her aboard the Hyperion under an fake name. He couldn't let her go, when I'm assuming she was ready to, and is forcing his kids to make the decision to either keep her in stasis with the (dim) hope of finding a curse for her cancer in their lifetime, if not then to keep her like that forever, or to take her out and let her die like she originally wanted.
Plus once you discover that, you realize that's why Alec made bro/sis!Ryder the Pathfinder- because if it was Cora (like it was supposed to be) then she'd take Ellen out of stasis no hesitation (and if she did end up waking up and being cured then learning she'd outlived her husband and son/daughter or even all three).
although honestly I dabbled a bit with his control issues in a fic and it was really interesting to explore
i finally finished for my star!! i know a snippet is supposed to be a couple hundred words but...in the grand scheme of this, 1.8k words is a snippet ಠ∀ಠ
the start of this arc in Shasta Shizuka & Toby's story is Slow News Day (◔‿◔)
Raylan Givens could feel the eyes trace over him as he waited in the main lobby of the north entrance of The White house. A little bit of a side show but he didn't mind. He glanced at the admin that told him he had to have an appointment. She gave him a thin, awkward smile.
Without an appointment, the best she could do is let him wait. Maybe she would pass by.
Josh was heading to see Toby about what Will said about him meeting with Senator Gaines. He moved with his usual low humming mania. His stride faltered when he spotted Givens out of his peripheral. He looked out of place in his attire; a charcoal gray suit jacket over a dark plaid shirt tucked into dark wash jeans. Cowboy boots, and perched smartly on his head a silverbelly stetson with a brown leather band.
Laughter bubbled up that Josh swallowed, chewing on his bottom lip.
“Can…Can I help you with something?” Josh asked, a tilt of his head, amused by the hat.
Raylan stood. “Deputy U.S. Marshal, Raylan Givens. Lookin’ to have a word with a friend of mine, Shasta Shizuka Days.”
Okay, weird. Josh blinked a few times. “Uh, yeah it's Ziegler now, she–got married. How do you know her?” Brow furrowing a little.
As far as Josh knew, Shasta didn't have friends. She had a friend. Singular. And it wasn't this guy. Toby and Will didn't count, they were her family. Josh watched the guy smile and itch his forehead just under his hat.
“Grew up together. I’m sorry, I didn't catch your name?”
Josh pretended to be embarrassed by the faux pa. “Yeah, sorry Josh Lyman.”
Raylan squinted an eye. “So you're not the husband.” He noted.
“What?” Josh made a face like he tasted something rancid. Shasta has a personality that only Toby could love. “No, eugh. So, what exactly did you need to see her for?”
“It's personal.” He replied nonchalantly.
There was a pause. The curiosity and nosiness rattling in him wasn't going to let him go on without seeing this to its end. This was an opportunity to get more knowledge on their pint sided chief counsel; handed on a platter the swell color of Raylan Givens’ hat.
Josh tucked his arms over his chest for a second and then lifted one up, pointing a finger up and out to Raylan. “Let me check and see if she's across the hall. Don't move.”
Raylan cocked a brow and watched him hurry off. “I’ll be here.” He drawled. The people were fast paced around him. Talking on cell phones, talking to each other in pairs and groups as they milled around him. Walking himself back he sat in one of the stiff armchairs and waited. Wondering what would draw Shasta to this kind of work.
He and she came from a place that moved slow, talked easy, in no real hurry.
Toby was handing off a stack of papers to Rena as he walked back into his office. Toby gave him a quizzical look, feeling Josh staring a hole into him. He turned on his heel to face Josh who bowed into the office, supported by a hand on each side of the doorframe.
“It's a Slow News Day, Josh but it isn't so slow you have to loom. What do you need?”
Josh was breezy, trying to keep himself in check. “Nothin’, just– wondering why the Marlboro Man is in the lobby asking to see Shasta, is all.”
Toby stood still, eyes fluttering before scanning the ceiling above them. Was there a gas leak in the building? He didn't really have the time to spare and deal with whatever Josh’s crow-like behavior caught his eyes and pulled him towards today.
“What?” Toby asked again, turning his attention to the papers on his desk.
“Some, Marshal, Givens. He wants to talk to Shas.”
He knew the name. Five years ago, when he was vetting Shasta. A photograph shared with him by his now father-in-law. Oisín Days’ eldest daughter in a baby pink sequin gown, with a simple daisy corsage with dutch clover on her wrist. On her arm a young man of good height, lanky, sun streaked brown hair and a good smile wearing a dark gray suit. Raylan Givens.
The high school sweetheart. A seed of something sour cracked and seeped in Toby’s stomach. What was he doing here, after so much time had passed? Toby knew it was by no prompting from Shasta Shizuka. Their initial contention when they first met stemmed from her adamant refusal to discuss in any way shape or form her life in Harlan.
What Toby did know was from her parents and sisters sharing stories, not Shasta. If her parents wanted to see them or their granddaughter, they had to come to D.C. Shasta would not go back to Kentucky in physical form or memory. While he ruminated, Toby dragged his teeth over his bottom lip. Josh watched his friend’s face contort with vexation.
“Toby?”
Snapping out of his thoughts his brows went up. “Yeah. I’ll uh, see what he wants.” Trying to be ambivalent.
Skirting around Josh, Toby made his way to the lobby. A shadow seemed to cross over his features that gave Josh the inkling that he made a mistake by going to Toby instead of finding Shasta directly.
Back in the lobby C.J. was now engaging the deputy marshal in conversation.
“That's—definitely a side I didn't know existed. So you're just dropping by to say hi?” C.J. had a big beautiful smile on her face, the marshal having told her something that made her laugh.
“More or less. Don't have her home address, but she works at the most famous house in the country so I figured–eh, what the hell.” He still had a good smile.
A rash of irritation bled through Toby, fixated on that stupid hat that Givens didn't have the sense to take off, no consideration for the building he was standing in.
His mouth twisted for a moment to keep his composure, speaking in that soft but direct way. “This, this is the holler, Marshal, you can't just drop in and say howdy.” He hadn't accomplished it. Toby knew he sounded like an asshole to Josh and C.J. neither of whom were dialed in. Yet he couldn't stifle the contempt.
Their eyes met, a rakish grin slowly spreading over Raylan’s face. The apprehension that radiated off Toby, the scrutiny in his eyes. Raylan didn't have to deuce it.
“You must be the husband. Wouldn’t have guessed that.”
Oo! wrong thing to say. Josh watched Toby’s brow go up, body shifting in place. He was going on the defensive. “Excuse me?”
Josh leaned over to C.J. “You might wanna go get Shasta…quickly.”
She gave Josh a look. “Did you know we would end up with a White House Springer special in the lobby? Or are you innocent?”
That boyish quality was ever present on Josh’s face, smothering a grin but the dimples in his cheeks gave him away. “Maybe not, totally innocent.” He admitted.
“Right.” C.J. said sharply, turning on her heel she headed for the stairs.
It didn't take long to find her as Shasta was already coming down the flight, handbag hooked on her elbow, cellphone in the crook of her neck while she thumbed through a small stack of briefs in her hands.
Shasta glanced down at C.J., her jet black eyes always seemed to pierce right through C.J. An unsettling feeling that she still had not quite gotten over. Like she had done something wrong even when she hadn't. She waited at the landing for Shasta.
“I don't know how late I’ll be. I can't say about Toby…he's having a moment of ingenuity and I could not begin to speculate how that will go.” She glanced at C.J. again. “Isaiah let me call you back, please”
Hanging up Shasta crammed the phone into her bag. “Yes, C.J.?”
Her raspy voice and stern tone did not help. But it also kept anyone who spoke to Shasta on task. C.J. just went right in.
“There's a guy in the lobby in a hat that has Toby hissing like a stray wet kitten. He wants to talk to you.”
One thick brow rose up, making a face, finishing her organizing. “Toby wants to talk to me or the guy in the hat?”
I think Toby wants to have a showdown at high noon. She thought sarcastically. “The guy in the hat. Toby–” She paused for a second, wondering how to word it, “Is he always that defensive of you when a guy asks after you?” Blue eyes batting with curiosity. Desperate for something to tease Toby about later and maybe just a glimpse past Shasta’s icy facade.
“I have to say C.J., I’m flattered that you think men ask after me.” She snorted as they turned the corner onto the hallway that led to the main lobby.
Despite their gap in height Shasta was hard to keep up with. C.J. had to walk with a little more effort to match her pace and stride. “So what you're saying it's just this Givens guy that Toby doesn't like?”
At the sound of his name. Shasta came to a crashing halt, looking up at C.J. with wide eyes. In real time she watched the color drain from Shasta’s face. What looked like fear painted her before Shasta gathered herself back together. Her brows bent hard, jaw set and locked tight. C.J. had seen Shasta angry, but this looked more like unbridled fury.
C.J. took a deep breath, feeling something nasty was going to unfold from what started as Josh being a shit. “Got it. This should be a real treat.” She replied flatly. So much for a slow news day.
Nineteen years. There has to be a reason. The short walk into the lobby her stomach burned with anxiety. Her pulse was so loud in her ears Shasta could hardly hear Toby’s voice carrying as he laid into both Josh and Raylan. She could physically feel the thoughts racing in her head as tried to fathom what Raylan could have found to come see her in person. Her scalp itched.
“My problem with you? Try your lack of awareness! How far up your ass was your head lodged, Givens!?”
“My guess pretty far, seein’ as I don't know what the hell you're talkin’ about–” Parrying the question with more indifferent wit.
“Toby!” It boomed through the room. On a dime Toby whipped around, seeing Shasta. Her body was rigid. He could see her white knuckling the files in her hands. Meeting her eyes Toby could read she was afraid, but hid it under that austere exterior. Her barking his name was also Toby's cue that he had said too much. That he said anything at all whether Raylan had context, was wrong.
“You dyed your hair.” Raylan said lightly, breaking the deafening silence.
Eyes lingering on Toby a moment longer they sharply cut to Raylan. There was no warmth or mirth to be had. Just two endlessly black irises, the light dying in them. The room felt cold as she spoke.
