The great Tomaso Albinoniās Concertos, from Opus 9. Previously, I was only aware of Albinoniās hauntingly beautiful Adagio in G Minor (adapted into a hearty ballad by Lana Fabian here). Later, I discovered in reading that he had been one of many influences on a certain J. S. Bach. But I have not properly listened to his music until the last 2-3 days. Albinoniās concertos remind me why I enjoy the light, energetic sound of Italian Baroque.Ā Ā
Pietro Ottoboni: Birth of a Future Cardinal of the Baroque Church
On July 2, 1667, Pietro Ottoboni was born in Venice into a powerful and influential family closely tied to the papacy. His great-uncle would later become Pope Alexander VIII, a connection that would shape Ottoboniās rapid rise within the Catholic Church during the late 17th century. From an early age, he was positioned for high ecclesiastical office, reflecting the eraās strong links between noble lineage and church authority.
Pietro Ottoboni was made a cardinal at a remarkably young age and went on to become one of the most prominent patrons of Baroque art and music in Rome. He supported composers such as Corelli and Vivaldi and maintained a lavish cultural court that became a center of artistic life in the city. His influence extended beyond religion into the flourishing artistic world of the late Baroque period.
Ottoboniās legacy is remembered both for his ecclesiastical career and his patronage, which helped define the cultural richness of Rome during his lifetime. He died in 1740, leaving behind a reputation as one of the most important cardinal-patrons of his age.
