Enjoyed knocking another painting out of Ballymacarn Park, done in an hour flat. A beautiful day it was, sun shining bright.. Great atmosphere with all watching the mini rugby in good spirits. #rugby #rugbyart #art #artist #ballynahinch #hinch (at Ballynahinch Rugby Club)
My journey of rural dereliction within the Emerald Isle continues with Dungiven National School.
Ballynahinch, County Down.
Stories about a pirate queen
Ballynahinch Castle (Baile na hInse in Gaelic) is located in one of Ireland's best-preserved and protected natural areas, Connemara, in County Galway, on the Emerald Isle's Wild Atlantic Way. It is currently a luxury hotel, but its past hides stories of pirates, clan warfare, and fighting against the English invasion.
It is located at the foot of Benlettery Mountain, part of the Twelve Bens mountain range, a sort of anglicized version of the original Gaelic name (Binn means peak). It is also very close to Ballynahinch Lake, as a branch of water runs alongside it and feeds it.
Her story is linked to the so-called "pirate queen" Grace O'Malley (Gráinne Ni Mháill), a figure who lived in the 16th century and, although never crowned, rivaled Queen Elizabeth I of England in fame.
The O'Malleys were a seafaring family who sailed the seas to trade, levied taxes on fishing in their waters, occasionally plundered, and controlled coastal castles to protect their lands in western Ireland.
Gráinne was the only daughter of Chief Dudara O'Malley of the Uí Mháille kingdom, whom the clan took its name. She grew up between Belclare Castle and Clare Island, and received an education that enabled her to speak Latin as fluently as her maternal Gaelic. At the age of 15, Gráinne married Donal O'Flaherty (Dónal an Chogaidh Ó Flaithbheartaigh), the heir of a neighboring clan, with whom she had several children and learned more about seafaring and piracy.
In 1576, during the Tudor conquest of Ireland, Gráinne accepted the policy of surrender and submission, submitting English inheritance law in exchange for official title deeds to her lands. Upon her death in 1603, the lands were inherited by her son, Tiobóid na Long de Búrca, from her second marriage to the heir of the MacWilliam Íochtar family.
The present castle was built around 1684 by the Martyns, a group of fourteen families who became the leading merchants and politicians of Galway city during the late medieval and early modern periods. Their fortune was based on trade with Scotland, England, Wales, France, Spain and Portugal.
At the beginning of the 20th century, it became the summer residence of the Maharaja of Nawanagar Ranjitsinhji, a former cricketer who played for the English national cricket team.

Ballynahinch Castle
