Quando arrivavano le lettere di uno che stava fuori prima si leggevano in famiglia. Poi si facevano leggere a tutte le famiglie di vicini che conoscevano questo qua. Diventava un fatto del paese: Quello ha scritto. Che dice. Che c’è di nuovo. Si sapeva che il postino era arrivato li a consegnare la lettera: Chi ha scritto. È tuo figlio. Che dice. Che c’è di nuovo. Che non c’era la televisione o il cinema o il giornale come c’è oggi. E giornale con su tutte le notizie. Prima le lettere erano un fatto importantissimo per la circolazione delle notizie. Che se ne parlava poi per una settimana o più si parlava di questa lettera. Poi ne arrivava un’altra e così si campava.

Saturday is my day off. Reading a Nanni Balestrini book originally published in 1971, set in 1969 Turin. Balestrini, along with Eco and Sanguineti was part of Gruppo 63, or neoavanguardia, an avant-garde lit movement. It was a movement that caused great strife in Italian literary circles at the time.
