the Balkans have been under-investigated on this site so far much to my regret, what with being a huge fan of SAT Stoicizmo and Igra Stakenlih Perli and all the other top groups from that region (less so Laibach if honest).
Croat group Babilonci tuck themselves away under indie-rock on bandcamp but this is way too out there and uncategorisable for something as limiting as a tag. light breaks and atmospheric textures and subliminal almost-melodies are cut against by a very thick local baritone speak-singing as if in a different session.
the group have uploaded about six albums of this samples and strangeness all in May 2017, perhaps indicating that this record is much older than it first seems, unless they are incredibly prolific.Â
dipping in and out of other material, they essentially have one song: in a strident mid-tempo with occasional funk tendencies surfacing, suggesting a strange regional flavour of hip-hop more than anything resembling rock. it’s a shame that the songs are not as compelling as their return to the same themes would have it.
