@azotas liked for an Ion starter!
The weeks that had gone by since Van’s defeat at the Absorption Gate were a bit... tedious, for lack of a better word. Ion knew that it was likely to take time for people to adjust to the way the world was now, but he felt busier than ever with people still asking for Score readings. People still wanted to know what the Score said even after everything that had happened. Not only that, but he’d heard Anise complain more than once about how it was almost like nothing had changed. Ion still wanted to remain optimistic, though. Luke and the others had done a good thing. The world was safe.
Yet, people still wanted readings of the Score. They still believed that the world descending into the Qliphoth had been foretold by the Score and had no reason to believe otherwise. Still, Ion wore a smile and pushed down his own feelings. He still needed to do his duty as the Fon Master.
Night had fallen by that point, and Ion had dismissed Anise to get some rest. The poor girl looked like she’d needed it. Even she seemed busier than ever these days, Ion thought. Was it wise for him to go off on his own in the dead of night? Probably not. While the God-Generals who weren’t Dist were no longer an issue, and Van was out of the picture, there still was always a risk.
The only sound that betrayed Ion as he maneuvered outside was that of his shoes against the floor of the cathedral. He did his best to be silent, but he supposed there just was no helping it. Soon, he stepped outside and into the cool air of the night. He took a breath, then let it slowly escape through his nose.
When Ion’s eyes adjusted more to the darkness, though, he paused. He thought he saw someone else a bit further beyond the steps of the cathedral. Curiosity beckoned him, and he began to descend the stairs. As he moved, he held his hand closer to his chest.
“Hello?” Ion felt a little silly calling out like that. It was entirely possible he’d imagined things. On the off chance he hadn’t, though...
