CONTROL is about the feeling of loss of something you never had.
There's a soaring freedom that comes with letting go of CONTROL, and an abject hopelessness in realising you never had any.

AZADI.mp3 - aphrodite
sweet mother, i cannot weave slender aphrodite overcame me
You know how when some things occupy space at the same time it blurs together? Like when the films âBeautiful Boyâ, âBoy Erasedâ and âBen is Backâ were all released at the same time and it became one blob of a film in peopleâs mind - âBeautiful Boy Erased is Backâ. Or when âHidden Figuresâ and âFencesâ was up for awards during the same time and though the topics and the titles are not similar in any fashion, people kept tripping up and merging the titles. Like Michael Keaton called âHidden Figuresâ âHidden Fencesâ at the Oscars.Â
Well, thatâs the reason I nearly missed out on Channel 4âČs WE ARE LADY PARTS, now available in the U.S. on Peacock.
How so? Because it was being talked about the same time as the teen rock group The Linda Lindas garnered attention and I assumed WE ARE LADY PARTS was a series about a teen rock band.Â
The Linda Lindas
Not The Linda Lindas
Non. This is the cast of WE ARE LADY PARTS, a audacious, brash, funny and enlivening comedy about the professional and, sometimes romantic, trials and triumphs of five Muslim punk punkers.Â
Created, written and directed by Nida Manzoor (DIXI, ENTERPRICE) who retooled her award winning 2018 Comedy Blap âLADY PARTSâ, the series follows band leader Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey, â Royal Shakespeare Company: The Tempestâ) and bandmates Ayesha (played by Juliette Motamed who has music career as Azadi.mp3), Bisma (Faith Omole, Shakespeareâs Globe: A Midsummer Nightâs Dream) and manager Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse, âBulletproofâ as they decide their sound - and chances at winning entry to a competition - would be improved by a lead guitarist.Â
Enter the unassuming Amina (Anjana Vasan, Mogul Mowgli), a part-time music teacher who is on the career path in science and on a quest of marriage. Quickly, realizing Amina has an interest in Ayeshaâs brother Ahsan (Zaqi Ismail, Britannia), Saira lures in Amina who begins living a double life as fledgling guitarist and dutiful daughter and friend.Â
Six enjoyable 30-minute episodes fly by much too quickly. Loved every minute of it.
