Managed to finish Axelay and my hand is very sore. After playing it through I feel like I really do like it but man do the weapons piss me off.

I feel like seeing it in magazines in the 90s it seemed like such a big game and it kind of is. For the most part it looks amazing and the stages are really artistic. The music really good too not on a r-type level but it's catchy.

The main mechanic of the game where if you take a none direct hit you lose one of you weapons might work better if all the guns weren't awfull. It let's you pick one of three guns at the beginning of each stage but for most of the game there are no guns to pick.

The SA-1 chip allowed for [Kirby's Dream Land 3] to be displayed in a pseudo-high-resolution mode

Pseudo-high-resolution mode is a stock feature.

From there, [Axelay] properly begins with a beautiful Mode 7 vertical scrolling level

Those segments do not use Mode 7. The lack of perspective and that there's more than one layer should tip you off.

That complex compression chip managed to produce almost 32-bit quality graphics on the aging SNES hardware.
