Donpachi - PCB - 1995 - Cave / Atlas
Where it all started
Sega Saturn - DoDonPachi
Title: DoDonPachi / 怒首領蜂
Developer: Cave
Publisher: Atlus
Release date: 18 September 1997
Catalogue No.: T-14419G
Genre: Vertical Shooter
The Saturn has more shooters for it than any other console as far as I know (aside from, like, the PC Engine), so any shooter on the Saturn has a lot to live up to if it wants to stand out in the crowd. Cave's DoDonpachi does just that. It's what shooters are all about. Action-packed, massive explosions, loads of items to pick up, and a great challenge. Add the great soundtrack and Cave's wonderful enemy and bullet patterns, and you have yourself one hell of a great shooter. It doesn't try to be fancy like Treasure's Radiant Silvergun. It's a shooter, and that's what it does.
I must point out that if you play DoDonpachi in the normal TV mode/Yoko mode (horizontal), then the image does have quite a lot of ripple lines running across it due to the image being squashed down to fit on a normal TV screen. Play it in arcade mode/Tate mode (vertical), and that ripple problem will be gone.
Simply put, if you want a great shooter for your Saturn, then get Dodonpachi.

Sega Saturn - DonPachi
Title: DonPachi / 首領蜂 [ドンパチ]
Developer: Cave
Publisher: Atlus
Release date: 26 April 1996
Catalogue No.: T-14405G
Genre: Vertical Shooter
The first in the DonPachi series of games, which is still going today with the recent DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou: Rinne Tensei on Nintendo Switch. So, how has this classic stood up to the test of time? Pretty well in fact! Yeah, the graphics are looking a little small and dated, but it still plays one hell of a solid shooter even all these years later. At times, the action can become frantic with enemies galore all over the place. You are given a choice of 3 ships to use within the game, all of which have pretty much the same style of fire. The A button gives a single laser-style blast that, while powerful, does slow down your ship. The B button is the bomb, which changes depending on what weapon you are using, and finally, there's the C button, which is your standard blaster.
