🧠 What is hashtag#Direct hashtag#Mapping? It is a cache placement strategy where: Each block of main hashtag#memory can map to exactly ONE specific cache line. There is no choice. hashtag#Memory block → hashtag#fixed hashtag#cache hashtag#index. 📐 How It Works If: hashtag#Main memory has N blocks hashtag#Cache has C lines Then mapping rule is: hashtag#Cache Line Index = (Memory Block Number) mod (Number of Cache Lines) So each memory block has only one possible location in cache. 🧩 Cache Address Breakdown A memory hashtag#address is divided into: Tag----->Identifies which memory block Index------>Selects cache line Offset------>Selects byte within block Structure: | TAG | INDEX | OFFSET | hashtag#INDEX → chooses cache line hashtag#TAG → verifies correct block hashtag#OFFSET → picks data inside block 📊 Example Assume: hashtag#Cache = 8 lines hashtag#Memory block number = 20 20 mod 8 = 4 So block 20 can only go into cache line 4. If block 28 also: 28 mod 8 = 4 Both compete for same line → conflict miss ⚡ Why Direct Mapping is Used ✅ Advantages • Very simple hardware design • Fast lookup (only 1 comparison) • Low power consumption • Cheap to implement ❌ Disadvantages • High conflict misses • Poor cache utilization in some patterns • Thrashing if two blocks repeatedly map to same line 🖥 Real CPU Example Most modern CPUs (Intel, AMD, ARM) use: L1 cache → Often 8-way set associative L2 cache → Higher associativity Rarely pure direct-mapped in modern high-performance CPUs Direct mapping is mostly taught for fundamental understanding, though small embedded systems may still use it. 🔍 When Direct Mapping Causes Problems If two frequently accessed memory blocks map to the same cache line: → They constantly evict each other → Cache miss rate increases → CPU performance drops This is called hashtag#cache hashtag#thrashing. 🎯 In Simple Analogy Imagine: 8 parking spots (cache lines) Car numbers must park in spot = (car number mod 8) If two cars always get spot 4 → they fight for it. No alternative spot allowed. 📌 Final Summary Direct mapping = Fixed one-to-one mapping between memory block and cache line. Fast and simple But prone to conflict misses.
