For autism awareness month I wanted to bring attention to the difficulties i have working in the office and manuevering the social politics.
I think being autistic my first thought is "i am autistic and i need accomodations. They are required to give me accomodations. So if i tell everyone then someone will help me"
Im very lucky in my life to have people who are gentle and explain how that actually comes across.
Telling all your managers or anyone who will listen can come across as messy.
Not everyone needs to know. Even if they wanted to help they wouldnt be able to. Its not on your teamlead to provide accomodations. They are not required too.
Where you get those accomodations is through HR and your doctor.
Its difficult because i feel that it is unfair that short term non comitted accomodations arent respected. By the time you start working with hr to get accomodations its too late.
You are already in a burn out, struggling to function and needing that break.
During this time having grace and patience to go through the slow bureacratic system feels unnecessary.
Its not perfect. Its not fair. And we have to work with it anyways.
Less is more. Tell the people absolutely necessary. Get it in writing. If you were willing to work but from home because that was more accessible. Get it in writing that they wouldnt allow you.
Update, as writing this out, because i was clear, grounded and provided only necessary information (which was vague) I was given permission to work from home and meet the acccomodations i requested!
Very stoked. :)
