Very few times that you may end up in a fight or defending yourself do you come out unscathed. It can hurt if you get hit, hurt if you hit something wrong, hurt if you fall. You may come out on top of it all; but more often than not, confrontation will hurt at least some, physically or emotionally, regardless.
Learning the tactics behind the arts and how they are applied in physical confrontations also teaches us how to be peaceful and avoid conflict, as well as handle our daily conflicts if we pay attention. I don't mean that we get into physical confrontations daily, but even those who have never been in a physical confrontation end up in some form of confrontation relatively often. Winning a thousand physical fights out of skill or ability does us little good if we can't handle the other types of confrontations that come are way that have no need of getting physical. I know a lot of people would like to punch their boss at times but that hardly solves anything now does it? I am not saying life is a constant battle that we must fight, but understanding the strategy of confrontation taught to us through and by the martial arts can help us face reality rather than just endure it.
