I've always considered myself to be very average, even my mom has told me that I'm pretty average compared to other people, so if I ever want to stand out, I'll need to work on myself. But unfortunately I feel like no matter how hard I work I'm still average. There isn't anything I'm particularly good at, so I find it so hard to make myself known to others
The definition of average that I think is most appropriate here is “having qualities that are seen as typical of a particular person, group, or thing”. So, if you’re average compared to other people, that means you’re similar to them. If you feel that you’re not like other people, that makes them the average ones, not you. It seems like you’re using the word ‘average’ to say “everyone else is so much better than me, I’m just average”, but in reality, that’s not what average means (if everyone is doing better than you at something, you’d be right at the bottom of the scale - if you’re average at something, you’re in the middle). So, I’m not sure it’s the most helpful word to use to describe yourself.
Everyone is a mixture of averageness and uniqueness. I have two eyes, which is the average amount to have, red hair, which is not an average hair colour, and I run this advice blog, where I write a unique answer to each question. I support gender equality, which is an average belief for my demographic, and I think that wearing red poppies on Remembrance Day glorifies modern-day war, which is a less average belief. I play piano, which is a very average instrument to play, but some of the pieces I play are my own compositions or arrangements, which are unique. The point is, some parts of who you are will be average, but others won’t be. If you haven’t discovered the less average parts of yourself yet, that’s okay. It’s time to learn more about yourself.
You might find some of my previous answers useful as a starting point for learning more about yourself:
“I’m not good at anything”
“I’m insecure about everything”
