"You're a massive douche, you know that?"
Her voice echoes in the compound from the volume in which she yells it across to him.
Steve and Natasha stop in their tracks, turning back to look between her and Bucky, understanding who it was aimed towards.
Nat gives him a sympathetic look, while Steve pats Bucky on the shoulder. There's a hint of a you're in trouble smile at the corners of Steve's lips, as he takes Nat's hand in his, and ushers her out the double doors.
Bucky doesn't turn around until he sees the double doors shut silently.
When he turns to look at her she has red flames sparking around her fingertips slightly. He's really done it now.
"We're doing this now," he questions her while playing with the gloves he has on.
They still hadn't changed out of their suits from the mission.
"You almost got killed," her accent is thicker than usual, meaning she's the angriest she's been in a long time.
"Everyone almost gets killed every time," he says calmly.
"Not like this!"
He's silent for a minute after her outburst.
He scared her, he knows it. He saw it in the field. For the first time he's ever seen, she froze from it.
"We're all fine now, Wan-"
"You don't get to play winner just because it worked this time. Today we won, tomorrow," she pauses eyes watering as she looks away.
He sighs and walks closer to her, her back is turned to him now and her hand is covering her mouth, silent tears falling.
He stands a little behind her, arms reach away but not invading her space.
"I know you've lost everything, believe me, I know how it feels..."
"But I won't apologize for protecting you at every chance I get. If I have to lay down my life for yours, so be it. I'll choose that option every time," he finishes.
She turns with red rimmed eyes and they crash into a hug.
"I'd choose it too," she whispers in his neck.
A silent omen. A secret promise.
He doesn't know if it feels like a rare blessing or a tragic curse to love someone this much.
