i wish there was generally a more nuanced approach to midnighter and apollo but at this point i will settle for a willingness to interrogate why exactly "gay batman" is a funny premise

i do honestly believe that midnighter is some kind of masterclass in how not to write a gay character

the thing that's so frustrating about the "first gay comic marriage" being the impression so many people have of the authority is that it makes it very difficult then to convince people that the same regressive politics that were and are the norm in the industry were never absent. like any franchise authority comics had what could be called high points, but it's still all predicated on the same racist, misogynistic, and homophobic, and dehumanizing norms as any other comic. while a genuine accomplishment was made, it happened against a backdrop of really disgusting ideas

i imagine getting jenny q puts a real damper on how often midpollo are up for fucking but they're sexually active enough that it's still an absurd amount for new parents. apollo is complaining to angie one day that they're only managing to get maybe one or two rounds in every week (but more likely every other week) since taking the baby and angie of course is not seeing the problem with this and he explains they used to get it on 3 or 4 times a week but they just don't have the time anymore for nightly multi-hour sex. angie of course relays this to shen (who she's fucking on and off by then, to the detriment of both of their mental health) who tells her not to start watching the camera feeds the way jenny sparks did (angie will not heed this advice but does return to her usual extra-dimensional porn soon after). after that she tells jack who says something vaguely homophobic and really he's just a bit put off over angie not pounding him into the mattress on a nightly basis. how exactly the information gets back to the doctor is anyone's guess and no one knows he knows until an argument breaks out during a meeting and he just wants to know exactly why midnighter is in such a shitty mood when he gets more action than the rest of them combined. this doesn't go over well and jack says something else inflammatory and midnighter threatens to quit which is how he ends up on the couch and unfucked for the following week. his mood does worsen

the authority spent a non-insignificant amount of its time inventing new and weird gay stereotypes that no one's heard of before or since. real half-remembered middle grade lunchroom type stuff. and it was all allowed to happen because no one is entirely sure what editors at wildstorm were paid to do
