June 12, 1890. Egon Schiele was born. This self-portrait shows him in a blazing orange jacket, head tilted back, eyes closed, one hand pressed to his mouth. The pose feels suspended between exhaustion and defiance. Schiele painted himself more than a hundred times in a life that lasted only 28 years. Few artists looked at themselves with such intensity.
