It was a ridiculous, unnecessary stunt on paper. One vampire alone unable to kill one human. Several vampires if the dead were included. Pathetic until anyone looked past the weak easily killed target to the strange masses that protected her. Men in wolf's skin and the largest coven on this side of the Atlantic.
Carlisle was wrong though. They could have done it without help. Jasper had done it with fewer numbers but that came with casualties. No one here was expendable. He glared at the floor to avoid scowling at elder. "There are alternatives," he rumbled, voice deep in his chest and bordering on unintelligible. Scraped a hand through hair in consideration before returning to leaning forward with elbows on knees.
"If we found them-" Victoria had slipped past but he refused to believe anyone without a gift could hide an entire army in one state "-we lower their numbers. They're coming to us, sure, but letting them bring the fight puts us at a disadvantage." His lip curled back in a brief snarl. "It doesn't make any sense. You put three newborns on an acre and they'll still try to eat each other alive. They should be killing enough to spot them a mile away."
