I really love how Bokuto struggles with mood swings. It clearly wasn't meant to be a super serious depiction of mood disorders, and it is often played for laughs, but Haikyuu is written with such genuineness that it rings true all the same. Like it isn't just a gag it genuinely affects his life to the point his teammates have to adjust to accommodate his needs. To the point he is proud as an adult to be more independent. And some of his lines about his outlook and how he stays positive are literally real methods mentally ill people I know use to keep their thoughts on the healthy side. I also think the sort of unintentional nature of his role as mental illness rep lends to him not being the typical shy edgy stereotype. (Not that mentally ill people aren't shy and edgy it's just a very narrow generalization.) It just goes to show how sincere the writing of Haikyuu is, and how it gives voice to teen issues in such a real and non condescending way that the humorous/lighthearted tone is transcended. Idk man I really love Haikyuu as someone with nearly five years of therapy under my belt.
