“Your Grace,” he heard, a thick, firm voice, with a heavy accent. He looked up to find Nikandros’ face, the Kyros Damianos had sent him as a reinforcement, along with a whole army. He is the most trustworthy man I know, he had said. Nikandros had already proved to be worthy of even more than that.

“Nik, I already told you to call me by my name,” Auguste said, straightening his back and running his hands through his hair, taking off his crown as he did so; it was already far into the night. Nikandros still seemed reluctant, “The same way you do with Damen,”

“It’s not the same at all,” Nikandros said, “But I guess I can do so, since we’re off duty now, Auguste,”

His name sounded like a song in that voice.

“Have you eaten yet?” Nikandros asked, narrowing his eyes at him. Auguste avoided his eyes; he had not eaten all day, he hadn’t had time to do so, “What would Laurent think of this behavior? Should I send him a crow?”

“You wouldn’t,” Auguste pleaded, “I’m... I’ve just been too busy, I forgot,”

“We’ll be having our meals together for now on, then, so you don’t forget,” Nikandros said, the corner of his mouth quirking up slightly in a tiny smile. Auguste’s heart melted on the spot. “Now, you better eat something, drink some water and get to bed,” he said, walking closer to help Auguste to get up.

Auguste accepted Nikandros’ hands, but pulled him down instead, “I have missed you,” he whispered, confident, his nose brushing against Nikandros’, “All day, I can barely focus on roads and strategies,”
