AbstractĀ
Overestimating elements of an actorās personality while simultaneously underestimating situational factors has been a pervasive problem in Western culture when trying to explain the cause of a behavior or event. This social error is known as the fundamental attribution error (FAE). Through an investigation of the literature I seek to understand why the FAE may occur and what consequences may result from its occurrence. I propose an explanation for the FAEās occurrence that unifies current explanations. I also illuminate possible consequences of committing the FAE that have not been clearly articulated in the literature. I argue that this social error may have implications for oppression, victimization, peer stress, and the making of moral judgments. I conclude by proposing that education is needed in order to bring awareness and promote proper training to attenuate the effects of the FAE.
