Calm and well-spoken, Xin Li is perfectly pleasant when you first meet him, just like any of the airbenders at the Temples. However, his pleasant exterior hides a dark ideology. In reality, Xin Li is a disgraced airbending master who perfected the art of isolating individual elements of the air. He doesn't create vacuums---he physically separates out the oxygeon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc. He has enough control that he can induce nitrogen hypoxia, a condition where a person asphyxiates in an oxygen-free, nitrogen-dominated environment. He was, of course, banished from the Southern Air Temple some 15 years ago for developing this technique. He now runs a school where he teaches others “how to win at any cost” no matter how cruel.
