There's a stanza from Annabel Lee that's been tickling my brainstem for a while, and it feels even more relevant now that we know how John and Alecto are bound together, and that their love was and still is mutual:
But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we— Of many far wiser than we— And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
That's the heart of it, isn't it? The source of all of John's power, the reason he's God, it's because his soul is connected to his Annabel Lee's. To end all of this, they'll need to be dissevered.
I'd say that the angels have already tried and failed, and the demons look like they're winding up to take a shot. Odds are that'll go about as well for them as it did for Augustine and Mercy. But there's someone the poem doesn't ask. It doesn't account for Annabel.
I think that may be why it matters so much that that Alecto still loves John, and where the true horror of love comes in. If Alecto's soul is going to be seperated from John's, Alecto has to want it. No one else can do it for her. Annabel Lee has to become the subject, and not the object.
Thinking once again about bodily autonomy in the locked tomb and that comparison I made between how Ianthe and Gideon each respectively treat Harrow’s body when they have it in their hands and Harrow’s consciousness has fled the building in HtN, but this time I’m thinking about how even while Gideon tries to be respectful of Harrow’s boundaries and seems aware of how this is a violation, it’s still a violation. She can’t help it.
Because the thing is, bodily autonomy doesn’t really exist in the locked tomb universe. Not in any meaningful way. Because there is something inherently violating about necromancy, and that’s the system this whole world is built on. What John has created is a system where power is derived from how much power and control you have over other persons’ bodies. This makes sense, of course, because John is a control freak, and then he was a control freak given the power to kill and remake the world in his image, and so he did, because surely if he was in charge he could make things better this time. So the system is selfish; the system is about using other people; it’s about seeing bodies as tools, or vessels, rather than as something you can violate or desecrate.
I don’t know what’s going to happen in Alecto, or if we’ll ever get Alecto, but I do feel like there’s a totally valid reading of this story that would lead one to believe necromancy is a system that needs to be overcome, ultimately, for it to not become a tragedy. Maybe it is a tragedy, and no one overcomes anything, but I just think it’s interesting.
i'm bracing for the amount of identity crises in atn and i don't even mean people having crises about their Own identity (which will also happen) but like. people having crises when seeing how much Others have changed

To pair my last post, but in happier tones.
Part of me thinks Kiriona was so set up on turning John back to mortal, after any Harrowhark intentions that overrule everything else, not because she has lofty plans of ruling over anyone but because if he isn't immortal anymore, he's not god anymore, and if he's not god nor the emperor, he's free to be just her dad.
I want the griddlehark drama and angst and romance for the next book, but I also want to see Gideon experiencing some, at the very least, normal times with an adult figure that doesn't hate her, that feels responsible for her, that might even love her, in an environment that isn't 'headquarters of an empire at war'.
Which alternatively could also be achieved with Pyrrha once they overcome the larger-than-life wall that is Wake between them, but that'd still be different than the father figure of John who, in his best days, has a personality that matches Gideon's so well and could very well offer the tenderness she's never been shown before, tenderness he's very capable of when he's not drunk in his own revenge plots.

i hope alecto goes into so much detail regarding first and second gen lyctors and their relationships. i would read a whole book about just them. how did they all get along immediately post-resurrection? what inspired them to found each of their houses? how did it feel when the first pair ascended? what did augustine experience when he killed and ate his brother? why did mercy kill cristabel? what really happened with anastasia and samael? what about the ones we don't know much about - ulysses and titania, cyrus and valancy, casseiopeia and nigella? did the first generation even try to stop the second from ascending? how much did they each individually hate john? frankly i could watch a 20 season reality tv show about the 10,000 years the lyctors spent together on the mithraeum but barring that i will DEVOUR whatever tazmuir decides to give us about them in atn
thinkin abt the concept of harrow running into nona’s gang in atn. turns a corner and boom. hot sauce, honesty, beautiful ruby, born in the morning. possibly also kevin, but maybe not. he’s probably wearing armour if he’s there. they start freaking out. honesty tries to hug her. hot sauce immediately notices her eyes are wrong. harrow’s floundering. if gideon/kiriona’s around she comes over to try and calm everyone down. they all notice her eyes, everyone freaks out more. alecto appears bc harrow’s obvs agitated, comes face to face with her gang. goes
