how many people would get mad if I said my favorite ATLA character is Azula
thinking back to the first season of atla during āthe southern air templeā when zuko was about to enter an agni kai with commander zhao and iroh told him:
at the time, youāre supposedĀ to assume that zuko picked a fight with some highly-advanced firebender and lost, and thatās how he got his scar and was banished from the fire nation. it even makes sense- we get the (accurate) impression that zuko has quite a temper, and itās easy to imagine him rushing into an agni kai with someone he definitely wasnāt strong enough to duel over some petty insult. it takes untilĀ āthe stormā for the audience to find out how zuko reallyĀ was banished, and when you come back to this scene with that knowledge, it paints it in a whole new light.
iroh wasnāt reminding zuko of a failure during a past agni kai at all. he was (in my interpretation) warning zuko to be careful not to let what happened during his last duel affect him now, because he doesnāt have any room to flinch when the fire flies at his face. iroh tells him to remember what happened last time because he fears that it could cause zuko to falter in his performance now.
i just... god,Ā itās all so well-planned, even from the first few episodes. the fact that they set the audience up to have misconceptions about zuko from the start, just so they could shatter them with episodes likeĀ āthe stormā... it blows my mind
If I had a nickel for every time I watched an animated show on a major tv network where they had an edgy 16 year old with a black and red palette and is remembered with his shaggy hair beef with the 12 year old protagonist who has something weird on his forehead Iād have two nickels which is weird that it happened twice
