Summary: The nations are surprised when they find out the avatar is not one but two. Spirits halved within siblings. Now hunted by the fire nation, you decide to distract them. Diverting them from your brother Aang, only to come face to face with the fire prince.
A hundred years ago the avatar vanished when the world needed him the most. Katara and her brother found the new avatar trapped in the ice. The avatar, his skybison, winged lemur and a girl… They were the first to discover that there wasn’t just one avatar…but two. The cycle halved for the first time in forever. Avatar cycle bound with not one but two. Siblings. Brother and sister.
“Y/n!” Aang called out, hand waving enthusiastically from the ground. Wind in your hair, you glided over the wind currents with your glider. Curling up a smile when a familiar playful lemur came joining your side. Squeaking playfully at the sight of you.
Chuckling, you directed the glider to the side. Circling above the trees. Spotting Katara and Sokka who have joined Aang’s side. Katara waving excitedly back at you. Dipping down, you dove straight down. Flipping the glider shut, easing your fall with the bending of air.
Feet barely touching the ground when you were surprised by a hug. Aang’s arms tightly around you. “Alright Aang.” You laughed out, patting him on the back for release. His grip had only tightened around you. “Aang, let her go!” Sokka had to step in.
Pulling him away by his arm. Aang’s face turned sour. Certainly when he saw that tiny smirk at the corner of Sokka’s lips. Having his own share of your presence. Wrapping his arms warmly around you. “Welcome back, avatar half.”
Annoyed, you flicked your finger against his forehead. “Au!” Rubbing his forehead. “Will you stop that!” Calling him out for it with a roll of your eyes. “What?” Sokka answered confused, giving a look to his sister. Katara rolled her eyes upwards with a shake of her head. Aang cleared his throat loudly.
“There is no such thing as a half avatar.” Dictating Sokka for the hundredth time. Sokka swayed his hands, utterly baffled by Aang’s dictation. “Aang.” Katara spoke with a soft clearance. Placing a hand on his shoulder. “It’s a joke.” She cleared up for him. Aang blinked slowly when he watched Sokka and you taunted each other with physical touch.
“Oh…” The realisation coming slowly. “I knew that.” Adding with a shrug of his shoulder. Sokka exhaled loud, tossing an arm over your shoulder. “News soldier.” His chest puffed up. Trying his stern, political voice. He tried so hard it made you snort loudly. “Yes, captain.” Saluting with a laugh.
You took a quick notice when your brother hurried over. Squashing himself against your body to be close. You told them about your sightings. Having scoured the grounds for a few days now. You left out the details that some were still wary of you being an avatar as well. Certainly the town's folk. Pushing you back for the supposed lies you were spreading.
Even when the truth stared them in the face, they were still wary of you. An avatar cycle broken in two. Shared with two souls. Something the world wasn’t yet ready to accept. Not when it had been bound in one for so many previous cycles.
You knew it would only upset your brother. He fought hard enough for your acknowledgement. Certainly to those non-believers. You also left out the fire nation ship that had crashed land. Far away by the shore. Worries you didn’t want to burden Aang with. Hoping the distance would remain too large.
Sokka rubbed his hand through your hair. Receiving a poke from Aang’s glider in his armpit. The glare he showed him, almost making Katara laugh. Trying his very best to give off a mean vibe, but it simply wasn’t working for him. Momo came flying down on Aang’s head, laying himself down.
Face down against his forehead. Squeaking growling from his belly. Aang’s supposedly glare fading in an instant. You followed your friends into town. Many curious faces taking a peek. Whispers following you like a shadow. “Is that the Avatar?” “Another airbender?”
You politely waved and bowed your head to them. Showing them you came with nothing but peace and kindness. A curious kid peeked from behind his mother’s leg. You showed it a smile. Bashful it hid behind his mother’s leg with a soft gasp. Spiraling your hand with a gesture, you let a gentle gush of wind play with the boy’s shirt.
His laughs notable to others. He came from his mother’s care, jumping up and down. Soon more children began to join. Waving, playing around and bowing to you. Bowing back to them. When you raised your posture, your gaze caught your brother’s. A content proud smile lingering on his lips.
The small and humble town welcomed the avatars with a feast and prospects of good fortune. When the day became the night, all of you retired to an offered place to stay. Katara Puffed up her pillow. “Tomorrow we’ll pick up our water bending lessons.” Glancing your way. “Me too?” Aang questioned, pointing at himself.
“Yes.” Katara answered with a soft snort. Sokka laughed loudly. “I can sleep in while you sweat it out.” His laughter was temporary as a pillow flew to his face. The three of you laughing. Sokka desperately trying to figure out who threw the pillow. Wiggling teasingly with your fingers, you gave yourself away.
Sokka huffed loudly, laying himself grumpily down on the bed. Curling up a smile afterwards without anyone seeing. Admitting to himself he rather enjoyed the gang being back together. It had been awfully boring without you around to tease and taunt. The soft snoring from Sokka came rather soon.
Yet that was not the only thing keeping you awake. The fire nation's ship. You had tried to shake it off, but the feeling never went away. A thousand what if’s spiraling in your mind. What if they were closer than you thought. What if they would pillage the village? What if they got their hands on Aang. What if…what if…
Haunted by your own kept words. Tossing and turning in the bed, they only grew larger. Burden weighing down on your shoulders. Eyes flashing open, you shot up right. Unable to bear it any longer. Needing to be certain so your conscience would be stilled.
Quietly you slipped out of your bed. On your tippy toes stepping past Sokka and Aang. Minding very well their breathing. Sokka’s shuddering snoring made you stop anxiously. Exhaling softly when he muttered sleepily, clutching the pillow in his arms tighter.
Reaching the door, you hurried out. Shrieking loudly at the breath of air shoving your back. Turning around to Appa, roaring deeply. Walking up to him, you shushed him. “I won’t be long…” Reassuring him. You were about to move away from Appa when a certain lemur bumped against your shoulder.
Slouching over it. Sighing soft, you picked him up. “No momo, I’m going alone.” Holding him up in front of you. Setting him carefully down. “I’ll be back, I promise.” Saying your goodbye’s to them. Momo squeaking, wide eyes blinking in a slowed motion. Appa’s deep roaring made you question your leave.
The town was growing smaller behind you. Roaming the woods once more. Scurrying the grounds would be pointless. Setting your hands, you spun around. A gush of wind, twirling you upwards. High above the trees, arms floating briefly in the air. Gaze scouting the area quickly with your eyes. Arms lowering as the air faded around you. Guiding yourself you landed on some branches high up in the trees. Preparing yourself for another look when you heard something.
Metal clattering in the silent night. Lowering yourself, you stayed out of sight. Trying to quiet your shuddering breath. Taking shelter between the leaves. Eyes widening with fear, for the fire nation came stumbling from between the bushes. Looking frantically around, your counting quickly became impossible.
Cutting and clearing their path with grunts and groans. Metal cutting nature. Your first thought was your brother. Over your shoulder, the town slept peacefully. Unaware of the approaching danger. Moving a hand to your chest, you tried to steady your hastened breaths. You should’ve warned them. You should’ve told them. You should’ve…
Regret and shame turmoil deep within you. This wasn’t the monk’s way. Panicking you knew you had to do something before they would burn the village down. Take your brother for the fire lord. Those things could never happen. Turning a quarter carefully on the branch, your hands motioned swiftly.
Sending a gush of wind. Watching how the fire soldiers were sparked by the ruffling of bushes. Without a proper thought, they ran towards it. “The avatar!” Calling out stupidly. Hands motioning gliding in the air, you made more bushes ruffle. Diverting them from the village. Brainlessly they followed your scheme.
Exhaling softly, you dropped down to the ground. Taking one last glance at them, before turning a quarter towards the village. Barely setting a step when a barrier of fire flickered before you. With a loud gasp, your head snapped the other direction. The fire prince lowered his fists, panting loudly.
“Think you could outsmart us?” He called out. “It seems no one can fool you, fire prince.” Answering with a sneer. Zuko huffed annoyed. Saluting him, you moved to walk away. Zuko grunting loud, sending another wave of fire before your feet. Flames flickering in your reflection, making you gulp loud.
“Where is the avatar?” Zuko called out moving in a circle. You pointed sheepishly at yourself, following his movement. Maintaining the distance between him. “Your brother!” Zuko shouted, blasts of fire flaring from his fists.
His words made you scoff with a roll of your eyes. Having slightly enough of this dancing. Sending a gush of wind his way. Zuko caught it with his arm, stumbling backwards. Remembering Katara’s lessons, you waved water his way. Zuko blocked your water with a wave of his fire. Grunting loud with annoyance.
Answering your actions with waves of fire. Lash after lash, forcing you to block it out. Stumbling backwards. Hands motioning from side to side. Zuko’s anger reflected in his bending. Wearing you out. Blindly forced to back up.
A wave of fire coming your way. Panting loudly to deflect it, heel tripping over a root. Letting out a yelp when your body crashed down. Zuko separating the fire to move through. His expression clenched, fists upwards. Eyes blinking torn upon you.
Hand out, eyes pleading for mercy from the fire prince. Zuko hardened his gaze once more, coming closer. This was a trick of you. A ruse to attack him at his weakest moment.
Yet staring more deeply in the pools of your eyes, made him question your intentions. Not seeing deception in your eyes, just the truth. “Please…” You begged him, watching him glance to the side. Begging he wouldn’t call upon the troops.
Zuko shook his head. Fighting hard to not give in to the unknown feelings lingering in his head. Reminding himself of you. You had made a mess, a fool of him. Zuko’s anger returned immediately, grabbing you forcefully by your wrist.
“Zuko…” You tried only to be ignored by him. Tugging hard on you, you fell forwards. Pushing yourself up to your knees, his grip firmly around your wrist. Your eyes widening with a gasp upon hearing his troops. Desperately punching his hand for release. His troops emerged from the bushes.
Their voices in a commotion at the sight of you. Hastening over to enclose around Zuko and you. Poking their weapons at you. Yelping loud, you shuddered closer to Zuko’s leg. “We should have her burned!” A few called out. Frantically, you crawled closer to Zuko. “Now!” They echoed in unison.
Zuko’s head went down to you. Hating how your eyes were staring back at him. Completely torn in two. Half of him wanted your release, the other half of him needed you for his restored honour. His soldiers lit their hands with fire, coming closer. “Wait!” Zuko called out, hand out to keep them at a distance.
“Stay away!” Ordering them. Kneeling down with a huff to your height. Looking in your eyes, thumb under your chin. Eyes wandering rapidly from left to right. “Zuko…please…” You begged for your release.
Zuko sucked in a breath, tossing your arm over his shoulder. Supporting you when he tossed you over his shoulder. “We’re leaving!” Ordering his troops. “Zuko!” You screamed out, punching him on the back.
One hand over his shoulder, clenched by his grip. Struggling for release, the fire prince kept his grip strong on you. His troops followed him behind. One avatar captured.
