What causes arthritis? In short, if a joint is not worked in a fully functional manner, over time it will not receive sufficient circulation and begin to degenerate. To be fully functional, a joint must move and load in all three planes of movement. If the body loses the function in any of these planes, it will create stress on the joint and other joints in the kinetic chain. In this case, this former gymnast and track athlete and current tennis player and golfer has developed arthritis in her left hip. While performing a single leg squat test, we should see adequate pronation at the hip joint, which consists of hip flexion, internal rotation, and adduction. The right leg with the healthy hip pronates nicely. You can easily notice the adduction. Meanwhile, the arthritic hip doesn’t pronation. Notice there is no adduction, or knee going in. This function was lost a long time ago. I see these imbalances as early as 8 years of age. Over years of improper nourishment of the joint through circulation, the tissue falls apart. Watch for future posts to see how we reverse this process by restoring function. Pain follows dysfunction. Disappearance of pain follows improvements in function. However, there is a delay in both.
