I love how incompetent Asynch is. In most sci-fi stories, the government body is the one pulling the strings and they know WAY more than they let on and everyone is an agent of some kind.
And Asynch WANTS to be like that… but they’re thoroughly incompetent at achieving it.
They found the backrooms by accident.
They go inside without safety precautions.
They initially plan to sell it as infinite storage.
Then employees start going missing.
Which they try to cover up.
But then those employees come back.
And they’re forced to do damage control.
Their presentation to the government is interrupted unexpectedly.
Null zones keep being opened up all over the world.
Employees keep getting lost or killed.
They’re finding random dead bodies inside.
The knowledge of monsters is being kept from their employees.
Even their cover story is the most unimaginative nonsense ever.
Try as they might, Asynch is just absolutely overwhelmed and incapable of keeping things under control. They opened a portal they can’t close and the consequences of that are spiraling exponentially. They’re all alone and they don’t know what to do. And try as they might, they can’t figure out what the backrooms actually is or even why it exists. Asynch is in WAY over their heads and they’re just floundering trying to maintain some level of dignity.
And I find that funny.
