asbolus, the seer (asteroid 8405)

Asbolus was a centaur who used birds to create prophecies. To the poet Hesiod Asbolus was an exquisite augur who even warned Nessus about his fated death at the hands of Hercules. Most significant was his prophecy for the wedding of Lapithae. As illustrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Asbolus was the prophet who cried warnings to his brethren to not go to the wedding - they were all doomed to die if they went. Notably this is the event in which Pholus, Chiron, and Cyllarus all die. Asbolus himself was shot through with many arrows by Hercules - Absolus’s injuries are described as a kind of “crucifixion.” IN MY OPINION Asbolus in your chart can represent a) your connection to birds, b) where you receive signs regarding the future, c) where no one tends to listen to you, and/or d) where you are a martyr.

i encourage you to look into the aspects of asbolus along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of asbolus AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede asbolus!

hercules (the non-disney version).

Hercules is the son of Zeus and Alcmene (sometimes listed Amphitryon - the grandchild of Perseus, the hero who slew Medusa). Zeus, of course, courted Alcmene in secret - the night of Hercules's conception, Alcmene disguised herself as her husband Amphityon after sleeping with him, in order to sneak out to Zeus. In this myth and having slept with two men on that night, nine months later, Alcmene gives birth to Iphicles and Hercules (lol twins? medically speaking, unlikely due to the DNA that is unshared between the two). Hera learns that Hercules is Zeus's demi-god son and immediately is enraged - sending snakes into the cradle of the two newborns. Hercules strangles these creatures, whilst Iphicles cries. In most myths, after this occurrence, there is a time jump (sometimes not: Hercules kills his music teacher, Linus, accidentally in a fit of rage, thereafter he faces a fate who wishes him to choose between a happy, unmarketable life and tragic, rememberable life - he chooses neither) in which Hercules is a man, father of many children, and a slayer of the Cithaeron Lion. This lion was thought to have preyed on Amphitryon's and Thespius's flocks of sheep. After hunting the lion for fifty some days, Hercules famously donned the skin of the lion, creating the deadhead of the beast - showing he was the top predator. Thespius's way of thanking Hercules was then having his daughters sleep with Hercules. After his youth Hercules marries the Theban King Creon's daughter, Megara. Hera, not having forgotten her spiteful ways, cursed Hercules. Hercules ends up slaughtering his family members in a fit of madness caused by Hera (sometimes he kills just Megara, sometimes just the children, and sometimes all of the above). To atone for his crimes Hercules visits a Pythia who informs him to seek his cousin Eurystheus and do whatever he asks of him.

Thus the Twelve Labors of Hercules are born. First, the Nemean Lion whom Hercules killed with his bare hands because the lion's skin was invulnerable. After slaughtering the creature, he shed the Cithaeron Lion's fur to wear the Nemean Lion's like armor. Second, Lernaean Hydra whom Hercules killed with the help of his nephew, Iolaus, who cauterized the site of decapitation each time Hercules lobbed off a head to prevent new heads from growing back. After defeating this creature, Hercules coated his arrows in the creature's poisonous blood. Third, the Ceryneian Head who was requested to be brought back alive to Eurystheus, who wished to give it to Artemis. This doe was thought to have antlers and breath fire - making this not as easy a feat. Fourth, Erymanthian Boar. Fifth, Augean Stables which involved cleaning the stables of King Augeas's immortal cows. Sixth, Stymphalian Birds, the man-eating birds in which Hercules's shot down with his poisonous arrows after scaring them out of hiding by using Athena's gifted rattle. Seventh, Cretan Bull as we recall from the Minos post, Minos had deprived Poseidon of his sacrifice - Hercules captured the bull and gave it to Eurystheus who release's it in the city of Marathon (later, Theseus kills the Cretan Bull because it terrorizes this city). Eighth, steal the Mares of Diomedes - these flesh eating horses were lured away by Hercules who fed them his own horse. Ninth, steal the Girdle of Hippolyta - the Amazonian queen received this gift from her father, Ares (which shows the militant nature of the Amazons she led), yet Hercules defeated them. Tenth, steal the Cattle of Geryon who were guarded by Orthrus, the two-headed dog - Hercules ends up killing the dog, Geryon, and Geryon's shepherds. After these first ten Hercules was supposed to be even but it was Eurystheus who demanded two more. Eleventh, the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. How Hercules learns of the location of these apples varies; in some he asks Prometheus who is set free by Hercules, in others, Hercules captures Nereus. Either way he finds his way to the garden to discover Hera's guard - Ladon, the dragon. Sadly, Hercules kills the beast but can't get into the garden because the creature's body is in the way. This causes Hercules to ask Atlas to get them - Hercules says he will take on Zeus's task to Atlas (holding up the heavens) whilst he gets them. Atlas agrees and retrieves the fruit but attempts to leave Hercules to hold the heaven's. Hercules tricked Atlas into taking it back and then leaves Atlas there to continue holding up the heavens. Twelfth, retrieving Cerberus from the Underworld - he convinces Hades into letting him borrow the creature.

Many years after these tasks, as we recall from the Nessus post, Deianira naively gives Hercules a tunic which peels and burns away his skin. Hercules dies in agony - after his death ceremony, he becomes a god of Olympus and Hera allows him to marry Hebe. IN MY OPINION Heracles in your chart represents a) where you are godly in the mortal realm, b) if/how you are a womanizer, c) where you are the best at hunting/searching/tracking, d) where you may feel a higher being is out to get you, e) where you atone for doing horrible things by doing horrible things, f) the tasks you may be forced to do, and/or g) where you feel betrayed by those you love.

i encourage you to look into the aspects of heracles along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of heracles AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede heracles!

read about nessus-heracles synastry

:/ idk why my first reaction is “:/” but it is. before answering this question, i felt compelled to write out his myth (click here to check it out). firstly, nessus was NOT a murderer. the assault that occurred was either sexual or a means to abduct deianira. but no murder was involved, aside from hercules killing him (we could say nearly any synastry with a murderous character asteroid in your 1h indicates the potential for harm but personally i do not).

BUT with all that in mind if we wanted to we could give every asteroid a dark motive. pan (4450) can be stalker and molester, aphrodite (1388) could be a brain dead narcissist, odin (3989) could be suicidal, dionysus (3671) could be a drunker, etc. i refuse to be told only negative things about placements and synastry aspects and so should everyone else reading this. if you are going to be a murderer or get murdered it’s about aspects too - it’s not just some asteroid in some house. the same goes for all the placements above. i love helping people out with ideas about what placements and aspects mean but even then it’s not always accurate because it’s a holistic practice. it’s always about one asteroid when in reality it should be the chart in its entirety.

but if you are ever curious you could use the multiple asteroids discussed in a myth. personally, i would have put nessus (7066), dejanira (157), and heracles (5143) all in the synastry chart together to be as accurate as possible.

nessus-dejanira negative synastry aspects (use the pdf version to see the aspects and orbs) may indicate the nessus person sexually assaulting or holding the dejanira person captive. while positive synastry aspects may indicate the nessus person aiding the dejanira person through obstacles they couldn’t face alone or the nessus person being enamored by the dejanira person so much so that they just want to be with them by whatever means necessary.

if you are a feminine dealing with a masculine, you are likely to experience this enchantment if someone’s nessus is in your 1h. how this plays out, if there are no nessus-dejanira aspects, depends on the aspects of nessus on your personal planets.

nessus-heracles negative synastry aspects may indicate the nessus person betraying the heracles person’s trust or the heracles person violently reacting to the nessus person’s actions. while positive synastry aspects may indicate the heracles person placing extreme trust in the nessus person or the nessus person providing a service for the heracles person.

if you are a masculine dealing with a masculine, you are likely to have a positive and trusting initial meeting with the person who’s nessus is in your 1h. how this plays out, again if there are no nessus-heracles aspects, depends on the aspects of nessus on your personal planets.

my main point is that i personally don’t believe that just looking at just one asteroid that has a myth with many asteroids attached is beneficial. it’s like reading one or two chapters of a book and saying you’ve read the whole thing. it’s the reason why since the very beginning i have provided you with the other character asteroids from the myths i retell. a post like this and my aphrodite signs, degrees, houses, and aspects post should help you to see into my mindset as to how i read astrology in a situation. in your chart - RELATE BACK TO THE MYTH. in synastry - RELATE BACK TO THE MYTH.

i hope that this helps everyone who is reading this and maybe inform some of us to re-approach some of the synastry assumptions and observations we have made. we should all keep in mind that the stars and planets are based on history and myth.

What do you think about Nessus and Dejanira being in conjunction in an individual‘s chart?

Nessus is 19° and Dejanira is 18°, so i‘m not sure whether i can really say that it‘s a conjunction, since i‘ve read that conjunction between asteriods work differently than conjunctions between planets.

yes, as long as it says the two are conjunct in your little table on astro.com - then yes, it ‘tis true.

all aspects between asteroids tend to need to be tighter (than the typical planet orbs) to be felt in a person’s life. and yours seems perfect for a description to likely resonate with you (1° orb is super tight)!

nessus-dejanira: positive aspects: you may be rather graceful and appear like a damsel causing everyone to want to help you. you could also be helpful towards those who appear to need help in the areas in which you are incredibly adept. you may be rather innocent and naive when it comes to trusting others. negative aspects: there may be an unhealthy obsession with self as nessus was absolutely enthralled at first sight with deianeira. you may find yourself obsessed upon first sight at some point in your life. alternatively, you may find yourself pursued aggressively and, perhaps, dangerously by someone you thought you could trust. you may often lie to yourself as nessus lied to deianeira as he laid dying. you may be gullible and naive when it comes to those who have proven themselves unworthy.

In your last post we talked about the meaning of the conjunction itself and the question arose, whether this conjunction would have the potential of becoming an abuser myself or whether it‘s more a sign of being the abused.

this user has a nessus retrograde! that was never noted until i saw the chart and that is pretty great to see given the line of questioning! also the aspects in question are trines.

nessus retrograde: a nessus retrograde person is someone who work behind the scenes - they don’t enjoy spotlights in a career sense. nessus was constantly interacting with costumers but a retrograde person may want little to do with costumer interactions. nessus also was one to give into his urges - a retrograde person may be more self-conscious of behavior and worried about how their actions effect others (they actually find themselves attacking themselves over their urges). they likely aren’t great at lying either. the down side to a nessus retrograde person is that they may have a temper that gets directed at people who can be very undeserving (hercules was reacting to nessus - it was unnecessary to poison hercules via his cloak).

nessus-sun: positive aspects: similar to nessus you may appear very trusting to outsiders. you all may be rather determined to aid those in need. there may be a level of masculinity or above average strength in the actions you make - nessus was crossing extremely strong rivers for a living.

nessus-mc: positive aspects: nessus was a very intelligent/ingenuitive business man - he saw that people wanted to cross the river but failed to build anything capable of crossing it. but he knew he could cross it - so he set up shop! you like nessus could be capable of seeing the demand for something you are capable of supplying. you could be just as ambitious as nessus in the business realm as well.

i will not be covering the dejanira aspects because i feel uncomfortable sharing my thoughts about them without giving you all a myth to see the connections! so that’s all.
