Cade loves skateboarding, that’s a known thing (yes it is a sport don’t fight him on that). He’s also a cheerleader, now having two squads for experience. But when it comes to sports, there’s one sport that’s always been in his life thanks to his dad and that’s tennis. Cade’s never really played himself but he’s spent countless of hours watching tennis matches with his dad. When he was younger, he’d race home from school to jump on the couch and watch the latest match, his dad right at his side and for that hour or two, nothing else mattered. Cade learned when he was older that his dad had played tennis in his much younger years, but stopped after college.

Another one of Cade’s crushes came in the form of Samantha Pickett. Sixteen and before Ava came into his life, Cade kept a low profile and just kept to himself. He hadn’t been trying to make friends with Samantha, much less end up with a crush on her when they met at the local skate park. She was all sunshine, smiles, and skinned knees. Cade spent weeks trying to learn how to flirt, how to stand so he looked cool, and worked on new skateboard tricks to impress her. Only, the day he was going to ask her out to the local movie theatre, Cade was beat out by one of the popular boys from the high school and Samantha Pickett really only talked to him when she needed homework assignments.

Cade has a little dolphin figurine that he keeps with him in his dorm room. At home, it sat on his nightstand every night. At school, it stays right on his desk in plain sight. The figurine was one of the very few things of his mother that his father kept around, everything else shoved in boxes and into a storage unit--where looking at it wouldn’t be too painful. Cade doesn’t remember anything of his mother. Sometimes he feels like he can remember her voice if he tries to think hard enough. When he was old enough to understand and sneak into his father’s bedroom, he’d stolen the figurine from the bedroom (something his father knew but never said anything about) and he’s had it ever since. Cade feels like keeping it with him is the best way for him to honor his mother. He might not remember her, but she’s still his mother.
