Would you, pretty please, tell me the story of how Runaan trains his floofies? I hear it's intense.
Of course! But it’s a long one, so have a seat.
Runaan understands cats. They prefer quiet and solitude, like he does. They trust carefully. And though they have a soft adorable side, they’re predators at heart, and therefore can only be mostly domesticated.
Anyone can train a dog, he says. It takes true dedication and connection to train a cat. Runaan deeply enjoys the skill set he’s got. It fits him perfectly, as if he were born for it. So he connects easily to others, whether they be elves or creatures, who were born for it, too.
The village calls him the cat whisperer when he’s got his kittens with him. He’ll take them on patrol—a fancy word for taking a walk—and everyone will just stop and watch as they pass by. Because this isn’t like taking your dog for a walk, oh no. This is so much wilder.
Do the cats bring you dead things to show their love?
I bring them dead things.
I’m a perfectly capable hunter, and I teach my kittens to hunt, too. Their job isn’t to take care of me. It’s to learn from me. And occasionally to curl up in a giant pile of fluff all over me so I dare not get up and wake them.
They’re very good at both.
I’m actually pretty proud of this?? Well anyways- have some Runaan carrying Rayla back home after an intense first day of assassin training 😊

Bran like became Obi-Wan Kenobi/ Cole the Fadewalker and Arya--I mean, at this point. She can make people-masks. She’s like, “Oh, okay. Huh. All right then. I assume nothing is hidden and you speak in riddles. Totally used to that shit.”
Keyword being "Almost". The time(s) it didn't work?
Luckily, those were all training accidents. Runaan's assassins created a rite of passage of their own, several years ago. They called it the Eight Minute Challenge.
Runaan would flip a sandglass with eight minutes inside and send some brave trainee to flirt with me, somewhere in the village. Neither of them knew where I was. The trainee would have to find me and stop for a friendly conversation, get me to warn them off by being obvious enough, and then survive Runaan's onslaught until the sand ran out.
It was great fun! For everyone but Runaan. He took each step so seriously that I'm not sure he ever truly enjoyed the task. Poor dear. But this training accomplished several goals for him, so he kept agreeing.
His trainees got to initiate a task involved in their own training, with several levels of skills testing that included tracking and evasion. They got to be a bit reckless with a safe and understanding elf (that was me, more than Runaan). They got to practice flirting, which every Moonshadow can use. The whole village kept getting the message that Runaan will hunt down people who pester his husband. And the whole exercise made Runaan soft and protective after everything was said and done. Win/win/win/win/win. With so many good results, Runaan really couldn’t say no to the idea.
Don't worry. He didn't actually kill any of his trainees. Blunted arrows dipped in a paralytic are embarrassing enough to get shot with in full sight of the market!
As an athlete, I often try to expand my workout regimen in special ways every once in a while to spice things up. What kind of workout schedule do you have? Any suggestions?
I have a rolling routine of training techniques I run my assassins through to keep everyone fresh. A cycle inspired by the Moon itself naturally. The general rule is to work until we’re nice and sore from head to toe .Start early, have a late breakfast, take a break for other things until lunch, absolutely kill it all afternoon, wrap up, rinse off, relax. And head out again late if the Moon is nice and bright.
