Fire casts light, but it’s not very full, and the bigger your fire, the more dangerous it is to your surroundings. To be clear, lightbulbs existed by the time I was a boy, but they did not illuminate your surroundings as well as they do today... and my mother already scolded me when she caught me awake after hours, she would have been furious to catch me wasting electricity too. Alternatively, I could light a candle any time I pleased. But even with a good reflector, well, I could still only light my immediate desk area, and it still did a number on my eyesight!
