Can you explain more about Loki and Sylvie as Adam and Eve and what do you mean by them taking on the role of the devil.
I mentioned a bit on my Twitter but it's hard to express complete thoughts there.
Episode 6 played on a lot of the apple symbolism. We see He Who Remains eating the apple, toying around with it and setting it in clear view of the camera while he tempts Loki and Sylvie to be his next successors.
As we know the story of Adam and Eve begins where God tells Adam to not eat the apple from the tree of knowledge, and then soon enough Eve is told of this, but Eve meets the serpent (the devil) and the two are tempted into eating from it. Apples in the bible represent temptation.
The whole theme of the show really centered on temptation. Miss Minutes tempted the two into a life of paradise, when Loki and Sylvie refused He Who Remains arrived holding his apple (temptation) and tempted them with even greater power in exchange for keeping the status quo.
This is where the comparison of Adam and Eve can get a little complicated because I donāt think the show 100% parallels the bible story, but there is a lot of inspiration taken from it.
Narrative speaking, when we think of Adam and Eve, we can associate them as destiny. They are the beginning of all beginnings. The mother and father of life. They were brought into this world seemingly naive and pure, but still greedy for more. The tree of knowledge. The knowledge being seeing the world for what it truly is.
Loki and Sylvieās entire journey was to seek knowledge. The truth of life and break from their garden to see the world for what it truly was. Some argue that Adam and Eveās sin was knowledge and it cursed us to this complex life we live in. Sylvie learning the truth of the sacred timeline and breaking the multiverse could in some ways be our punishment for her (and Lokiās) sin.
As for becoming the devil. I picked up quickly that the show hinted heavily that Loki and Sylvie are devils. These two photos, are some examples. Ā Ā
Loki, as in the Norse god, is theorized to parallel the Christian devil in some ways. Thereās a lot to unpack with that statement but I donāt want to derail the conversation so all you need to know is theyāre essentially characterized as mischievous, deceptive and self-serving. Three characteristics Mobius and several other characters like to say to Loki and Sylvie.
Honestly, I was unfazed with these plot points in the show because naturally, thatās who Loki is. But it wasnāt until recently when I realized He Who Remains compared himself and his variants to devils that it clicked.
He Who Remains in some ways could potentially see himself in Loki and Sylvie. But unlike his variants, he is unthreatened. Perhaps itās because he knows Loki and Sylvie ARENāT Kang. But perhaps also because he could have shaped Loki and Sylvie to be exactly what he wanted. Similarly to how God shaped Adam and Eve in his image.
Like I said, it gets complicated. But while Loki and Sylvie could be the beginning of the beginning (Mother and Father of the Multiverse) they could also be the successors to the devil. And HWR was betting on them to take the apple and be his next of kin. OnceĀ āthe thresholdā was crossed, though, his power over them was lost. They were truly given freewill and had to choose for themselves.Ā
In the bible, Eve is believed to be the first to sin and the reason why we are where we are now. She unleashed a Pandoraās box of horrors to humanity much like Sylvieās sin. But while Eve was the fist to sin, the blame is somewhat shared. And Loki, in the finale makes that very clear.
Ā āWe made a mistake.ā While Sylvie metaphorically unleashed knowledge, Loki takes guilt in failing to stop it.
Whether Loki and Sylvie were meant to represent the devil or Adam and Eve or both is not entirely important. It is what the symbols were meant to represent. To put in the back of our minds and associate the scenes with these familiar folktales.Ā
Itās too early to tell what HWRās true intentions with Loki and Sylvie were. I think it could go either way, but ultimately in the end I think Loki and Sylvie will take their place as two devils serving the multiverse and keeping it in balance while offering a more liberated timeline for all. They could both then transform their power into the god(s) of stories.Ā
So were they created by a higher being as two bonded souls destined together to keep the multiverse in balance? I think itās highly possible. I donāt think their connection was created just for a love story and the power they shared together showed us just that.Ā
