A crop possibly from across the sea with a great deal of potential utility as army fodder if I can only persuade my presents to adopt it's production? A crop that is perhaps good mashed baked or put in a stew?

I didn’t think it was a staple crop, but the way Tuon talks about it, I guess it is, to some people. Light, I guess I see how it could keep an army moving, too.
Can you really cook it in anything besides water? Though I’m told it’s a bean, so I guess it could go in a stew. You know, it’s odd, but I’ve never seen the Seanchan put beans in their stew. They always serve them on the side.
Right, so you want to know how to convince the locals to grow kaf. First of all, don’t send people on a fools’ errand. You’ll want to check for yourself that it actually grows in the area, although for beans I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. Ask what other crops you might need to grow with it to get the highest yields. Farmers take on enough risks without adding a totally unknown crop, they need to see it growing before they’ll take a chance like that.
Then you need to prove it’s valuable. Should be easy enough if you’re near a Seanchan settlement. If you’re not, you’ll have to make it popular with your friends and family. Create a local market for it by serving it yourself to guests and asking for it at your most expensive inn. Rich people are all mad, they’ll do whatever is in fashion, the more ridiculous the better.
What is the economic value of a chicken?
It depends a little on where you are and if it’s been a good year or not, but back in the Two Rivers you could get a pretty little laying hen for a silver penny, and sell a dozen eggs for 2 coppers.
A chicken fresh out of the pot when you haven’t eaten in days, though? You can’t put a price on that.
