So here’s the mystery ascidian, yes it looks like a turd. I did however some work on it; I found the oral tentacles, still preserved in the alcohol from 1992. More importantly, one of the ascidians was slit open a while back, and through this opening (pic. 4) I saw some sort of folding inside the branchial sac. Apparenty this is a perfect character to distinguish the Stolidobranchia tunicates from the other orders of ascidians. So yeah, today I felt like proper amateur tunicate-expert.
In other news, the sepia-article is published in hard-copy today, and I have some great news about the shrimps I’m working on regarding the naming of these species, hint hint wink wink, so stay tuned!
