After the gargantuan success of Idol Project and the recent debut of Unity, many fans of the show had been wondering if MNet would produce another like it, or if it would be a one time deal, and those questions have been answered today.
In a past press conference, producers mentioned that they would be interested in making a second season of the show but wanted to provide a twist, and as it turns out, that twist is a gender swap-- late last night, MNet revealed that season 2 was coming soon, but this time, the show would feature male trainees.
MNet has said that they are currently auditioning trainees and building a show roster, and that all of the companies who competed before are still providing talent for the program. No one has mentioned yet when the show will begin airing, but MNet has said to expect it soon.

On June 26th, MNet released the following article regarding their newest survival show
We are proud to announce the third installment of one of our biggest shows to date, ‘Idol Project’.
Idol Project was survival show designed to put female trainees to the test, 25 contestants from 5 separate entertainment agencies competed against each other for a chance to debut. 7 of the trainees were selected to be part of a special girl group, Unity, that will promote for four comeback cycles before returning to their respective companies to continue with their training. It is through collaboration with DS Media, Radioactive Entertainment, Spotlight Productions, IL Entertainment and New Wave Music that we were able to pull this ambitious project off, so we would like to sincerely thank all five companies for enabling us to do that. Idol Project 2 followed much the same format, with male trainees instead of female, and Alpha Records instead of IL Entertainment.
We are shaking things up for Season 3; both male and female trainees will be eligible to compete for spots in a four-member co-ed group. DS, Radioactive, Spotlight and Alpha have all agreed to contribute to the show once more, with Gaia and 360 jumping on board too. Each company will provide two male and two female trainees.
As in the first two Idol Projects, trainees of all ages, experience levels, ethnicities and talents will be competing, and the show will feature a rotating panel of judges, mentors and coaches. While competing on the show, trainees will stay in a dorm together-- one dorm for males and one for females-- and the shared living spaces will feature cameras, for confessionals and an inside peek on the lives of these trainees. We are excited to announce that the public will be able to help their favorite trainees achieve success through online votes as the show continues.
Each episode will feature performances of varying genres, and will include challenges that will not only showcase the trainees talents, but also push them to do things they may not be experienced in to see how they will react and adapt.
The final lineup for the show is being finalized and will be announced soon, with the show itself premiering within the next few weeks.
While Idol Project 3 will follow much of the same format as the first two Idol Projects, we will be trying a few new things with this season, so please bear with us! Things might get a little bumpy here or there.
Applications will be released tonight so if you’re interested in your trainee competing in Idol Project, keep an eye out for those! Without completing the application, your character will not be counted in the show.
The show will be run on the Rivalstv blog, much like last time.
Of the 24 contestants, all empty spots will be ‘filled’ with NPCs. New trainee characters can join the Idol Project at any time, and will replace a NPC. If a muse is dropped or unfollowed, however, that character will stay in the competition as an NPC.
The way we’re setting up the challenges/tasks/ranking system is in a way where you can catch up at any time if you’re willing to put the work in. There won’t be very many limited-time only events or anything, in an attempt to keep things fair and to be welcoming to new people joining (and to accommodate those on hiatus/with busy lives). More will be released about the points system in the days to come.
This is for fun. To keep things fun, and to keep an edge of suspense, the point counts will not be revealed. A weekly ranking will be released, and at the end of the competition, the admins will make a post will all the points (and how we got those points, so you know we’re being honest).
While there are NPC characters, and they might be thrown into the rankings, that’s just for fun. The NPC characters are not eligible for the final group.
Please, no power-playing. Be realistic with your characters. All of these characters are human, and none of them are perfect. Your character is not a perfect god who can do no wrong– they have flaws and things they aren’t the best at, and we want to see this showcased too. This task is mainly for fun and character-development.
While the show will include both male and female trainees, the final group is set with two male and two female finalists. Because of that, male trainees will only be ranked against male trainees, and female against female.
While trainees who have competed in past Idol Projects are open to apply, you may not apply if your character has made it into either Creed or Unity, or if they are already set to debut (if they are set to debut, you will have been contacted by an admin already). If there are not enough trainees for the show to run, we will open it up to trainees in Creed or Unity who are not set to debut in another group, and possibly soloists as well.
