Mass (Colder Darker Matter) ily
ily Mass (Colder Darker Matter)
it's a sculpture made of the lightning-struck remains of a Texas church, as part of a duo by Cornelia Parker. It juxtaposes its sister sculpture Anti-Mass, made from the remains of a church incinerated by arson.
The lightning-struck church had a white congregation, and racists burned down the church of a Black congregation. They are about violence, one enacted by an unpredictable force often evoked in the phrase "If I'm wrong, Lord strike me down right now" and the other a horrible reality that Black churches regularly face in the US. Mass vs Anti-Mass.
Both change in density of the charcoal, looking like perpetual explosions. An instantaneous violence captured in time. Idk I think they're neat, but unfortunately Mass (Colder Darker Matter) is the only one I've seen in person. And it's so wild to look at irl, it's so cool.
