The initiative will increase export capacity and competitiveness while shifting manganese exports from Gqeberha to Ngqura, enabling the transformation of the Port of Port Elizabeth, with terminal closure targeted for 2032. Although not directly linked to the LNG terminal programme, the broader development of infrastructure at the Port of Ngqura will contribute to improved port efficiency and increased bulk commodity handling in the future.

Importantly, this project has been recognised at the highest level of government, as it is one of 12 South Africa’s priority infrastructure projects announced in March 2024, and has been accorded a Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status by Infrastructure South Africa. This is not merely symbolic, but it affirms the urgency and importance of accelerating implementation and ensuring coordination across all spheres of government and industry.

Major protest action brings the N2 to a standstill in the Eastern Cape

The N2 between Tsolo and Mthatha towards Qumbu has reportedly been brought to a standstill following violent protest action near Maqanyeni in the Eastern Cape.

According to reports, protesters blocked the road, causing severe traffic disruptions and leaving motorists stranded for hours. There are also allegations that shots were fired in the area, raising serious safety concerns for motorists and truck drivers.

Authorities have warned road users to avoid the route amid fears of possible looting and escalating unrest.

Although the exact cause of the protest has not yet been confirmed, communities in the area have previously raised concerns over poor service delivery, water shortages, deteriorating roads, and other local grievances.

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes while the situation remains volatile.

Head-On Crash During Police Chase Near Delmas – 5 Suspects Arrested

A high-speed chase ended in a head-on collision on the R555 road towards Eloff, just outside Delmas town.

Police say five suspects were caught offloading groceries from a truck in Sundra, in what’s believed to be part of a grocery theft syndicate. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while four fled in a white Polo.

A chase followed towards Delmas. Delmas SAPS were called to assist, but the suspects drove straight into an oncoming police van, causing a head-on collision.

Two suspects were taken to hospital for treatment while two were taken to the police station. The police officers involved sustained minor injuries and were also taken for medical checks.

Police are currently processing the crime scene in Sundra and the accident scene. Traffic is diverted to an alternative route.
