Cihro watched Aritian stalk off through the garden. With him left the weight Cihro had been carrying for nearly a year; the weight of secrecy, the weight of having to decide when and how,Ā the weight of having to prepare for the worst. He couldnāt undo time and take back the words. Whatever their future, they would have to figure it out with that truth shared between them.
It mattered that Aritian was angry. Anger stemmed from hurt and betrayal, which meant he trusted him, in his own way. It mattered more that Cihro had told him.Ā
He rarely got to indulge in honesty. Lying and getting away with it felt good, but bearing his heart did, too. Living alone with his secrets had been heavy; the more family he had to lean on, the lighter he felt about his sorrows, past and present.Ā
Elspeth watched with him, then turned to him with a rue look. It passed into an approving smile and nod. She spread her arms. He pushed off the fountain and walked into her hug, burying his face into her shoulder. When she squeezed him, just a little bit of Bahamut and forgiveness hugged with her.

FINALLY made my height lineup for Melliwykās party, the Outcasters-- thanks to needing to know how Mel and Quinton lined up to one another for that last doodle, haha. The poses donāt have the ~personality~ of the other ones Iāve done so I may redo it in the future, but for now at least I have something :D
left to right: Melliwyk, Quinton, Zhartook, Aritian, and Claire
Fitz, my half-elf Barbarian being carried back to base by his frienemy, Vekti the half-orc sorcerer, while my aasimar boyfriend bard coos sympathetically. He accidentally set me on fire fighting a bone naga. It happens, bae. <3

[EDIT: this is no longer totally canon, but I like it so it gets to stay. maybe parts of it still happened]
[116]Ā
Theotae came out of her trance not long into Cihro and Aritianās watch. Came to? Woke up? What did elves say to refer to coming out of a trance? Either way, she came to, unfolding her legs and taking on a more relaxed position while Azariah did the reverse and Symania stood up to stretch.
Cihro dipped into the bag by Kishoreās resting body and withdrew the jug of alchemy. He popped ones of its corks and carefully refilled his flask while Theotae watched on, expression neutral.
āElven wine,ā he explained, tipping the jug so it sloshed in the crook of his arm. āWant some?ā
āNow doesnāt really seem like the time to be drinking,ā she said. In her voice he heard the memory of him and Day being reckless with pixie concoctions back at the pub in Astrazalian. That was on themābut he knew this alcohol was safe.
āSuit yourself.āĀ
Aritian gave the tiniest smile while he pretended not to listen, gaze cast into the wilderness. It mustāve looked disingenuous or comical to him, Cihro offering alcohol as olive branches to people he had unstable relationships with. He couldnāt help itāit was one of his ways of bonding. He didnāt need the alcohol as a bridge, but it helpedāloosened the tongue and inhibitions and all that, even if a little. Cihro only needed a little wiggle room.
He corked the jug and replaced it in the bag of holding, then made his way across the fire to Theotae and sat cross-legged next to her. He gave her more distance than heād give his friends, and she shifted slightly, more upright. Behind her, a twig snapped under Symania's foot as she turned.
āI wanted to talk to you, actually,ā he said. āYouāve been really quiet for a lot of the journey. I wanted to ask how you were feeling about things.ā
Theotae levelled him with a calculative look. āI didnāt think you had much respect or care for my opinion.ā
āDepends on the opinion,ā Cihro said. āMost of them I donāt, but I know youāre not stupid. You just put value on different things.ā
āWeāve lived different lives,ā she said. Cihro tipped his flask to her and drank in agreement. She blew out a long, slow sigh, indicative of someone who'd been holding on to a number of thoughts. Cihro wasnāt sure if it was a dismissal or agreement until she said, āWe werenāt sure if you were all coming back when Lady Shandria sent you off.ā
āNeither did we,ā Cihro said, cracking a half-grin.Ā
āThereās nothing I hate more than being forced to put my life in someone elseās hands.ā She tossed a line of hair over her shoulder. āWe were starting to consider escape options when you returned. I couldnāt stand the thought of waiting for death instead of meeting it myself.ā She paused. āBut you all proved capable, in the end.ā
āWe try. Weāre kind of constantly sent into deadly fights that arenāt always ours.ā His eyes dropped to his lap, where his hands folded his flask side over side. He was reluctant to share with her before now, too scared to see a callous indifference about it. āSuccess for us hasnāt always been as easy as it was with the leviathan. Itās not a yes or no. Day and me died, before we came here.ā
She said nothing. He glanced up to see her brows knotted with a quiet, ruminative intensity. He shook his head, mostly at himselfāhe didnāt know why he was sharing. Maybe he just wanted to see if she actually cared for them, but he didnāt know why it was important to him that she did. He couldnāt see his answer, either. The set of her brow couldāve meant a lot of things.
āFor Day it was a few seconds, but for me it was hours,ā he continued. āAnd this whole time weāve been here, every time we go out, I just think about how it could happen again, before we find our mom.āĀ
āThat would be...unfortunate,ā Theotae decided, choosing her words precisely. āI had the same thought when your group was gone.ā
āYeah.ā They lapsed into silence. It wasnāt uncomfortable, but it also wasnāt pleasant. Cihro sipped at his wine again. He made a quick scan of the treeline around their clearing, heard and saw nothing but bramble and the button lights of fireflies. Symania had wandered off to the opposite side of their camp, behind Aritian to a place where she could see them but lend them some privacy.Ā
āI didnāt like how you suggested I should bargain some of my life for this,ā Theotae said after the lull. āTo Queen Titania.ā
āI was feeling a little desperate,ā Cihro admitted. āSurprised you werenāt.ā
āOur motherās been gone far longer for me than she has for you.ā Theotae shifted again, propping her lower back to rest against a mossy rock and crossing her arms. āIf you were really desperate, you couldāve given your own. What you and Kishore said applies to me as wellāand not only people, but civic responsibilities.āĀ
Cihro couldāve rolled his eyes, but he resisted.Ā
āSo. A brother-in-law?ā she asked, gesturing to Cihroās hand with hers.Ā
āDidnāt wanna mention it,ā Cihro said, rolling his ring between his fingers. āYou barely accept us as brothers, I didnāt think youād care about a third.ā
āWell, like you two, it makes him a brother whether I like it or not,ā she said.Ā
āHe knows about you,ā Cihro said. The urge to withhold info on Talsin was harder to suppress than an eyerollāhe wanted to gush and brag about his husband, especially with someone hard to impress like his sister, but she would dismiss his praise for Talsin until she saw it for herself. āHeās agreed to be civil so long as you are.ā
āIām perfectly civil.ā
āI wish.ā Cihro tucked away his flask. āAnd what about the stuff with being Queen Titaniaās great grand-daughter?ā
āWhat about it?ā
āWhat do you think?ā
Theotae shrugged, an unimpressed look falling over his face like a fine mist. She stared into the fire and the flames danced in her eyes, a shadow of their mother Cihro saw from the illusion.Ā
āI suppose I could find a way to add it to my title,ā she mused, half-serious. āBut really, I donāt think it makes much of a difference. We were who we were before we came hereāthereās little to no archfey in our blood. These are different domains, and our connection to her is so thin we canāt do much with it.ā
āSeems reasonable,ā Cihro said. āI think a part of me is holding out hope that I get to live a bit longer, though.ā
āYou mentioned your husband out-living you,ā she stated. Cihro was making a jokeāhe didnāt expect her to unknowingly twist a knife heād lodged in himself. āWhat is he?ā
āHeās an elf,ā Cihro said with some irritability, but it didnāt last for more than a second.Ā
āInteresting. From Syngorn?ā
āOh, hell no.ā
Theotae snorted, but it was less derisive, more āthat sounds about right.ā
Cihro wasnāt sure what kind of note to end on. Heād hoped over the course of their trip sheād open up more, but she still hadnāt come forward with an apology and Day hadnāt spoken with her. There was time, but a lot of it had passed with her at a distance. She watched their backs from a place where they couldnāt see. They were separated both by choice and the influence of higher powers lording over them in the Feywild.
He clapped his hands to his thighs and rose to his feet. āWell. Weāre here, you know. I donāt always wanna be the one reaching out.ā
āI never asked you to,ā she said, eyes flicking to him without moving her head.
āNo, but thatās what makes me decent, I think.ā He dusted his pants. āBesides, I know what itās like to want to open up but not being able to for whatever reason.āĀ
āDonāt pretend I donāt know that, brother,ā she cautioned, and though his eyeline was above hers, she still sounded like she was talking down her nose. āYou donāt know whatās going on with me.ā
āI know. Thatās the point. I can only make assumptions ātil you talk.āĀ
They stared in silence, trying to find faults in each otherās armour. Cihro thought he saw tension in her shoulders, a trace of tiredness under her eyes, of wanting everything to be over and decidedābut it was still conjecture on his part. Whatever his guess, he thought he could relate to her. She just needed to reach out.Ā
She looked away first, back into the flames. āThank you,ā she said softly.Ā āThereāll be more danger soon. Keep your guard up and your wits about you.ā
āIām trying.ā
He returned to Aritian and sat hard, drawing a knee close to his chest. Aritian said nothing, then held out a hand. Cihro passed him his flask.
