Miguel Cabrera, 1st baseman for the Detroit Tigers signed an 8 year/$248 million contract extension in 2014

Clayton Kershaw, pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers signed a 7 year/$215 million contract in 2014

Albert Pujols, designated hitter for the Los Angeles Angels signed a 10 year/$240 million contract in 2012 (Robinson Cano, 2nd baseman for the Seattle Mariners signed a contract with the same number of years and dollars as Pujols in 2014)

Giancarlo Stanton, right fielder for the Miami Marlins signed a 13 year/$325 million contract in 2015

David Price, pitcher for the Boston Red Sox signed a 7 year/$217 million contract in 2016

In fairness, this is not exactly a one to one comparison, as hockey operates under the hard salary cap, while baseball has no salary cap, just the luxury tax--to briefly explain, the luxury tax is a threshold that if teams have a payroll that exceeds that value (in 2017, it was $195 million), they have to pay a percentage of every dollar they go over, ranging from 17.5% for first time offenders to 50% if a team exceeds the threshold five or more times.  Baseball players also play 162 games to hockey’s 82, which one could argue means they should be paid more because they play more games.  Additionally, MLB’s TV contracts are worth a lot more, their contracts with ESPN, TBS, and Fox together valued at $12.4 billion over 8 years beginning back in 2012 (for comparison, the contract signed by NBC in 2011 was 10 years/$2 billion).  And lastly, the average MLB team is valued by Forbes at $1.54 billion, while the average NHL team is valued at $517 million
